The Hobbit Hole XV - Pass them by! Pass them by!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Pass them by! Pass them by!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Good evening!

All of the accidents I've had due to weather involved ice, and none of them resulted in any damage to either the car or myself... did teach me to wear my seat belt, though!

My most "spectacular" one was coming off of a curve onto a straight stretch, and discovering the road was covered in black ice... car started to fishtail (at 50 MPH or so) and I couldn't pull it out. Wound up doing a 360 across the road and plowing sideways into deep snow off the road. Got out and hitched a ride back to town... when my Dad was inspecting the car for damage later, he found nothing wrong, except for snow which had come up through the wheel well and undercariage and packed around the engine. He took care of that in about 30 seconds with a steam cleaner...

See? Days off are truly something I could live with!

We get weather-related days off too, but only under threat of hurricanes. No fun that.

However, I was mortified to learn that he doesn't have 2 boys in the military, but THREE!

Try to find out if he's a veteran, too. The odds seem to favor that with three sons in the military. I'll mail you two more knives tomorrow, just to be on the safe side.

YIKES!!

I'd prolly die from a heart attack, despite surviving the actual accident!

Heh... no time to panic, really. Although in the one I described to Rosie above, it seemed like I had several seconds when the car was completely out of my control, and I was just sitting waiting for the impact. I remember thinking "This is gonna hurt," but it didn't. Just a big "FLOOOF!" and snow flying everywhere, and then I was sitting there thinking, "Is that it?"

Jesus, Bear, that's pretty scary.

Although, my few car accidenst in life can be blamed on carelessness, I think, or stupid aggressive driving. Not that I am an aggressive driver, but sometimes I make a mistake.

My brother had that happen...but only did a 180. He had been going somewhere, but when he ended up in the other lane facing back towards home (luckily no one was driving by!!), he decided to take that as a sign that God didn't think he should be out. ;-) He kept driving in the direction he was pointing.

I've had minor slips, but never enough to get stuck or off the road. I'm not as sure with the van as I was with the car, just because it's bigger...but last winter I did OK. It was a VEY snowy year, but not really icy.

A week off for just a foot of snow? Go on! I can believe that happening in Texas, but not a northern state! ;)

It wasn't the whole week...just lots of days during the week...like three out of the five. And it snowed over a foot in a day SEVERAL TIMES during the week! It was pretty cool. But the snowplows were having trouble keeping up.

So was I, for that matter! Especially since they kept plowing me in.

"I was sitting there thinking, "Is that it?"

Saruman, is that all you can conjure?!!

We all know that he can conjure a lot more;-) Wish he couldn't, though.

Believe it or not, that wasn't the scariest accident I've been in. The time I hit a deer had my heart racing faster... hmm, and the time I slid down an icy hill with minimal control was scarier, in that it was a residential area and I could have hit someone, or maybe driven into someone's house...

Did you get to keep it?

Ohhh, I thought your total accumulation was just 12 inches... several 12" falls during a week is another story!

The university I went to prided itself on not closing due to weather in 70 years... it closed twice during the four years I was there. Once, we got 36" of snow over 36 hours... it piled up so fast students couldn't get in the doors of the main lecture hall, they were blocked by snow.

It was pretty big! In no shape for eating after colliding with the grill and left fender of my car, though. Did about $1750 damage to my car (in 1986 dollars).

Dang thing jumped out of the woods from my left, and then ran to get in front of my car. If he had continued straight across the road he probably would have passed behind me, but nooooooo, he had to turn and run at an angle to get ahead of me, just in time to kill himself on the left front end of my car.

F****** kamikaze deer....
