The Hobbit Hole XV - Pass them by! Pass them by!
See our freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net home page! ^

Posted on 09/02/2004 2:18:28 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Pass them by! Pass them by!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Good morning!

Ugh...hope they get the server overload problem fixed soon so we can go back to a hundred posts a page! I hate it when it's cut down to fifty...

And now, I must find coffee. And eat my oatmeal - with peaches. Anyone guessed by now which fruit was on sale at the grocery this week? ;-)

Mmmm...peaches...

Good morning, all you fine folks!

Suzi, have you been in contact with your family?

OT, love that house! Will I get to come visit (someday, when I have a car I trust to get me there?)

Reading the thread about the Kinko's in Abilene.

Methinks CBS won't be able to duck much longer.

This is very entertaining!

They make me so sick. The arrogance!

God bless Jim Robinson and FR.

Steve got paid yesterday, I'm gonna make a contribution.

It's wacky. I looked hard at Dan Rather's face during that weird interview with the secretary last night. I thought ...all this trouble and stress to allege that George W. Bush had powerful friends and was not the most devoted soldier in the unit 30 years ago. OK, lets just say that when George was a kid he liked to screw off. Does he really think this is vital to the country?

I just think the more they push this, the worse they make their side look - and though they'd deny media bias, it's becoming more and more obvious which side they're really on!

There are some who will believe in the memos no matter what...but for a lot of others, this may be a wake-up call.

We can always hope, anyway.

Yawn. Good morning. I'm a little stiff, but pretty well rested. I definitely think my sleeping problem was from the heat.

Morning!

Pssst! Hair! I think your brother didn't realize it was 5:30 EST when he wandered in here. *grin*

I'm truly enjoying this memogate debacle. The more CBS tries to defend it, the deeper they dig themselves into a pit of irrelevance.

Thanks for the heads-up on the story, Ramius. I wouldn't have really paid attention to all of those threads if'n you hadn't mentioned it.

Good morning!

I finished Round the World in Eighty Days this morning. The narrator didn't cease being annoying, but it was fairly entertaining.

I still prefer Journey to the Center of the Earth and Mysterious Island, though...

You're allowed to prefer one over the other! I am glad you enjoyed it.

My sister - have I mentioned this - gets to do a year of study in England. She just arrived and is homesick of course because that's the sort of person she is; but she says she's the only one of the international students who understands the accents. We figure it's from how many times she watched "Lord of the Rings"...

I talked to the b-i-l in Gulfport this morning. They had some winds and rain, but not much at all. He lost a couple of shingles off his roof, but his fence stayed up!

I haven't heard from my younger sisters yet. They were just outside the western eye wall when it made landfall. I'm sure they got some tropical storm force winds, if not worse, and plenty of rain. The biggest danger for them was probably tornadoes.

My older sister and her family will probably return home today. They wouldn't have had a storm surge on the west side of the storm, so again, all they'd have is maybe some damage to their trees and some lost shingles. Won't know until they return home, though.

Thanks for the prayers, everybody!

No, you hadn't mentioned that! Very lucky for her! Even if she's homesick now, it'll be something she'll remember for the rest of her life. Very, very cool!

And now *you* have an excuse to go to England at some point...

I'm also reading Timeline, and so far it's pretty good. I'm surprised at how much they changed for the movie, though. And Crichton has a habit of changing character perspective almost every page. It's both entertaining and a bit bewildering...

LOL! We enjoy the British sitcoms, and if you've never watched any British tv shows, it does take a while to wrap your mind around the accents!

Not this year, unfortunately. Sigh... I wish I hadn't been so motivated as an undergrad, maybe I could have found an excuse to do a year away, too. One of these days I'll get there, though.

Yeah, switching POV so often is annoying. Very few non-SF writers can manage multiple viewpoints well, IMO. In a fantasy or SF story, the story is often so big that multiple viewpoints are required; whereas in a mystery or something, the story would usually be better served with only a single POV. And when someone's just switching for the sake of switching, all the POVs end up sounding the same.

(POV is something I make a bit of a study of, since I'm not really sure what type suits my writing best.)

Hi everybody, Vim here. Making a limited foray back into Pajamaland. It's nice to see some things don't change. Pleasant chit chat in the Hole just like always. All is safe and secure from Hobbiton to Michel Delving. Ah, but I must be a wandering dwarf, sustaining bruises and scars in my many adventures. But look what I brought you! This pathetic wimp put up no fight. I'll trust in your discretion as to what his fate shall be. Stay safe!
