The Hobbit Hole XIV - Hill and Water Under Sky

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Watching "Rescue Me" on FX cable channel, here.

We've seen that a couple of times. It is pretty good! Is this the episode where the tall dark haired fireman is attending a support group for those traumatized by 9/11? It is just priceless!

Alaskan weather can be very bad, I've heard.

Here she is, Windjammer Cruise's Fantome, 281 feet, sank 1998, off Honduras, in Hurricane Mitch.

Seems like kind of a dumbass, but nevertheless fascinating article. Skipper was only 32, pretty young, probably too much so.

Yes, in the Gulf of A the weather actually does vary... from *bad* to *really seriously bad*... hehehe... though I also remember a crossing from Dutch Harbor to Juneau when for a period of a couple of days the whole thing was just a huge sheet of glass. *Everybody* on the bridge thought this was exceedingly creepy.

Wow... that windjammer was a beautiful ship. Heartbreaking to lose something like that. Interesting sail arrangement. It's like staysails on acid. I'm guessing that it was an automated rig. Those middle staysails look like they rollerfurl or something... so they could control lots of sails with electric winches and less crew. Tragic to lose a ship like that.

Fascinating story... yes, maybe a dumbass, maybe just really unlucky, maybe just too smart by half. Sounds like he thought he could out-tech the storm, and skirt it. Too bad that the storm didn't believe the models. They're obnoxious like that sometimes.

What a lovely boat, and what a shame to lose her and her crew.

Good morning!

I'm all riled up. Am composing a rebuttle to a stupid, slanted email on the history of women's suffrage. I might post it later.

I missed it completely! Was in bed early and didn't even see the commentary. Hopefully a transcript will show up later.

Good morning!

Today is PAYDAY!!! Woo-hoo! Tonight I'm gonna grocery shop 'til I drop...

Hope all the Florida folks are making the necessary preparations. I know we've been repeating it often...but once again, you're in my prayers!

Heh...how bad does sugar in the gas tank really muck up a vehicle?

Maybe Corin should experiment...

Good morning folks!

Got my shutters up, bought water and supplies and have 3/4 tank of gas. Not much else to do except sit and wait.

I have to run 4 payrolls today and hopefully, they will let us out early. Unfortunately, rumor has it that the pointy-haired bosses upstairs want us to work LATE to be sure everything gets done. Grrrrr....

Try to watch it...see if you can get it on CSpan or something and actually watch it. He barely paused for any applause, he just plowed through it. It was fantastic.

To get the full effect, find it and watch it. I'm gonna watch it again!

I don't have any official plans for tonight (no practices or anything - woo-hoo!), so hopefully after I do my grocery shopping, I can watch some chunks of the RNC. From what I've heard, that speech was a major highlight.
