Eleventh Thread: Wedding Edition: The Hobbit Hole XI - No One Admitted Except on Wedding Business!
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, |
Still round the corner there may wait |
Home is behind, the world ahead, |
Squirrels also like big piles of peanuts!
My wife is soooooo jealous. She'd probably want to put it on top of the house.
Can you imagine the arsenal I'd need for self-defense in this town with a sign that size?!
Just out of curiosity, have you seen Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon?
No, but I don't really like Chinese language. And I'm looking for realistic fight scenes - Matrix, etcetera, don't help...
I'll watch Crouching Tiger sometime just to say I've seen it.
Well, if I were braver, I'd put it closer to the road, but I think it is actually quite visible where it is, and looks nice in the setting of the pasture with the trees behind.
I just don't want to lose it. Right now, it's in spotlight range from the house, and all that open pasture to cross is, I hope, intimidating to anyone with intent to sneak... Heck... they might even be able to hear me on the porch pumping the shotgun if they get close to it.
You...you...Squirrel lover!
~smiles~
Wish I had deer to feed...
And does it have to be swords? How about knives?
Feed 'em. Shoot 'em. Fill the freezer with venison.
~shakes head~
Not me! It's not in my nature!
Mmm, knives are good too. I need to get some general idea of how it's done.
Swordfighting with style, rather than a couple guys whacking each other with broadswords. Fencing's ok, but it ought to at least look realistic.
Heeere, Bambi! Come heeeere, deer....I've got some veggies for you....
Most excellent banner.
I think anyone who's been trained by Uncle Sam will tell you that real hand-to-hand, wherein two (or more) people are trying to kill one another, has only a nodding acquaintance with anything you can see in any movie.
Even boxing is stylized, even when practiced by the likes of Sonny Liston or Mike Tyson. Fencing has become a faster-than-the-eye event --- blink and it's over. Many of the Asian martial arts have been exaggerated and perverted to look good on the movie screen. Capoeira was intended to be stylized, so it couldn't be identified as fighting. Savate has ben absorbed by other martial arts.
Are you looking for to-the-death fighting? Or "incapacitation?" You might want to look at some USMilitary training videos ... gentlemen, are they worth our time?
I want realistic entertainment fighting. Everyone watches movies... nobody believes they're that real. I just want something that sort of looks real...
Fencing-style, I suppose that's what I want.
I can suggest a series called Conquest, produced and narrated by Peter Woodward (the son of the great British actor Edward Woodward), for the realism versus stylized fornms of combat.
Always recall, combat is usually about death. Do your characters want the thing they're fighting for enough to kill for it? Die for it?
Like what he did to the prisoner in the first episode of the second season ...
Or check out Sporanos ... Tony gets brutally arty with his fists sometimes.
But a couple people whacking each other with swords is no fun... Errol Flynn is too stylized, you're right.
Maybe I'd better just keep hacking at it. Or keep all confrontation off-page. Or write sappy little romances. Only I can't write that sort of scene either.
Sigh... oh well, I've got years to practice until I drop dead, hopefully.
