The Hobbit Hole XIV - Hill and Water Under Sky

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Of course, Aquaman shoulda gone himself.

LOL! Poor Aquaman! Well, at least he didn't have it as bad off as his sidekick Aqualad. . .

I don't remember much about Aqualad. Was he as big a dork as Boy Wonder?

He was pretty unmemorable, at least in his original incarnation (he's cooler in the New Teen Titans cartoon, where his voice is done by Wil Wheaton). He was like a young teenage version of Aquaman except with black hair, a red top, and blue gloves and shorts and boots. He had no life apart from following Aquaman around and getting rescued by him.

Robin and Aqualad didn't have it as bad as Speedy, Green Arrow's teen sidekick. Despite his nickname, Speedy became a heroin addict.

The Light Brigade ("Charge of the...") vs. Easy Company ("Band of Brothers")?*

Enterprise-D vs. Star Destroyer?

Legionnaire vs. Hoplite?

USS Monitor and CSS Virginia ("Merrimac") vs. Spanish Armada?*

*Does technology beat superior numbers?

This is true! :) He probably got it the worst of the original Teen Titans. When Robin's the most charismatic one in the group, you know you've got problems. . .

BTW, I picked up the novelization of Spider-Man 2 today and was pleasantly surprised to find it was written by Peter David.

I was just thinking the Atlantic just acted more mature...

I have no response to that!

Wow, what a good movie so far! I'm really enjoying it... it's going to make watching this anime much, much more enjoyable. I don't remember the last time I watched a movie in black-and-white.

Gah, but they sure translate some of the honorifics and titles in a bland fashion! "Sensei" does not mean "sir"...

Hi there! Regarding giving JimRob a knife tomorrow when we see him. I posted to you about it last night and I think maybe you didn't see the posts? ecurbh and I decided that my knife was still very sharp and yet we were able to put a really new edge on it with a knife sharpener.

Probably not as perfect as you would have done, but we have no time!

We've printed the background pages from the website to give along with the knife, and printed the testimonials. We wonder if you have a current count on how many knives have been sent.... and as a side note, have we sent one yet to the soldier that wrote to us via the website?

Are you at the intermission?

Watching the "Mr. Iron Chef" competition on Food Network, here. Quite a different slice of Japanese culture. ;)

Not sure on the first two. Need to see some stats on the Enterprise-D and Star Destroyer--offhand I think the Star Destroyer's a heavier ship but I'm not sure.

"Legionnaire vs. Hoplite?" The legionnaire's main advantage was in group tactics rather than one-on-one superiority, so my answer would depend on whether we're talking about two guys fighting or a whole group. In a group, I'd definitely pick legionnaires, given even numbers. In one-on-one fight I'd give the individual legionnaire a slight advantage due to superior weapons and armor, but the fight could go either way depending on the individual--the Hoplites were great athletes.

"USS Monitor and CSS Virginia ("Merrimac") vs. Spanish Armada?" I see this as a tactics issue as well as a technology-vs-numbers issue. The Armada with its numbers and maneuverability can surround the Monitor and Merrimack and cannonball them from all sides, ram them from all sides, and board them from all sides. To counter this the Monitor had 2 big guns and the Merrimack had 10 cannons and 5 guns, so given that I don't think the Monitor and Merrimack could sink the whole Armada quickly enough to survive before getting rammed/boarded even if they could take a lot of cannonball fire. One armor-piercing hit to the Monitor below water level could kill the whole crew.

So what's your picks?

Glad you're liking it! It gets better as it goes along, believe it or not.

Yeah, the honorifics are bland, but remember this was probably one of the first Japanese movies translated into English, so they were just learning how to do that.
