The Hobbit Hole XIV - Hill and Water Under Sky

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

That would make a good tagline.

...whenever I belt that out people really look at me like I'm a loon...

This really happened.

When I was stationed at Fort Hood, I headed up a group of five or six soldiers tasked to take out the HQ tents, spread 'em, check 'em, and make sure they were put away properly. It was a hot day even by Texas standards, and hard work on an asphalt surface, which might have led to what occurred.

One of the guys was humming and whistling in a non-committal sort of way, the way many of us do when trying to keep the mind active during some mindless task; at one particular point, he started singing softly,

"You make me feel...
You make me feel...
You make me feel like a..."

He broke off and looked up and found the rest of us staring at him.

No one said a word. I think one of the girls snickered just a little.

He shrugged, returned to his task, and

"...natural womannnn...."

bwaaahahahhaaa... that's priceless....

I remember we had a guy on our boat that every time we went to general quarters... and all the stations manned up the sound-powered-phones... everybody would check in and report. Then the inevitable long periods of silence would go on and on and on...

Suddenly the sound-powered-phones would all light up with:

"Roooooxxxannnne... "
"You dooon't have to put on the reeeeeed liiiiighhhht.... "

[Its funnier if you know that during GQ all the white lights are either put out or shifted to red.]

Every stinkin' time. Got to be where we counted on it. :-)

Ooh, big no-no in Cheesehead Country! That needs to get emailed to the Green Bay news station! Their coverage of Kerry has already been pretty negative. A couple weeks ago they were interviewing Kerry's local spokesman for a response to the Swift Boat ads, and the guy got really defensive and kept ducking the question. The news clip then showed the guy continuing to talk while a voiceover cut in, "Eventually we *finally* got him to answer the question. . ."
