The Hobbit Hole XIV - Hill and Water Under Sky

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Ok, where is everyone today? Hiding? Did I miss a memo? You guys are usually around a little on Sunday afternoons...

Well, I liked the church I went to today much better, even if the label's different from what I'm used to. I think I'll go back.

Ok, where is everyone today?

We were out spreading horse poo and re-tying our tomaters!

The cherries are ripening:

The big tomatos needed taller staking... They outgrew just being tied to the fence.

I'm just now back. Wow...VEY slow day, no?

I woke up and it's fall. Today, at least. Got boots on for the first time since spring.

*sigh* Fall weather produces rather the same effects on me as time lag. If I start waxing poetic, slap me, OK?

Ecurb looks like a farmer!

Those tomatoes look fantastic!!

You know there is lots you can do with green tomatoes too...least of which, fry them!

They make great pickles...

I don't know how close you are to the end of your season...our maters are already done. Gophers got each plant, one after the other. But we got plenty.

Steve's taking a nap.

Was that the house that was used as the exterior for the Southfork shots? I didn't even recognize it until the discussion went on after you'd posted the pictures. I didn't watch 'Dallas' too often.

Whoa! Them's some nice 'maters! I'd like to grow some cherry or grape tomatoes in pots next year. Depends on what kind of patio or whatever we've devised by then.

End? - We haven't had a red one yet of the large ones! Round here, we're lucky to get some to ripen before the frost! ;~D

Wow, things ARE slow around here today. I'm fixing to start some gumbo. I'll leave it cooking while we go to 5:30 Mass. I'm gonna use the Gulf Shrimp I brought back with me from MS this summer. You should have seen the look on the baggage agent's face when I asked if it was ok, cause I just had them in a big suitcase. At first she said no, but then when I showed her how rock solid frozen they were, and how they were wrapped, she relented. The company that catches them freezed them in solid blocks; 5 pounds of shrimp and whatever water is needed to keep them fresh while freezing. I brought back 40 pounds of shrimp! I had to pay an extra $25 cause the suitcase was too heavy, but I paid it gladly!! Shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico is just SO good!

I'm making some gumbo for our Parish Family Festival, and my brother in law brought 20 pounds of small shrimp to Perdido so I could bring it back home. It's gonna be SO good, but I don't know if folks up here are gonna like it that much. I run the Outdoor Grille; hamburgers, hot dogs, kielbasa, and decided I wanted to add something new this year. If they don't like it, I'll just bring the leftovers back home and we'll eat on it all winter!!

Well, don't waste the greens ones...they are vey tasty!

If one starts to turn, and the weather threatens, pick it and put it in a paper sack with a ripe banana. I'll turn red.

Won't they just ripen on a sunny window sill? What's with the banana?

Vey slow indeed!

I went to the bookstore and read bits of a Java book that actually had the topics I want to know about... yay, I guess I'm ready for classes. I'm nervous as all-get-out.

Ok, look at a postcard of your hometown and describe it to me. If you sound like a cold-sober Victorian poet, I'll know what's wrong...

Been working out outside this afternoon. It's warm with a nice breeze. Back now to relax a bit before I do some writing.

So it sounds like the new church went okay. What was it like?

That's about what my tomatoes look like now! Was just looking at them a few minutes ago. Can't wait for them to turn red :)

"Place less-than-ripe tomatoes in a paper bag with an apple or banana; the ethylene gas given off by the fruit will hasten the ripening process. Keep the tomatoes out of sunlight--they will overheat and ripen unevenly--and arrange them in the bag stem-side up to prevent bruising."

(We put ours on the windowsill too...I understood the bag process took less time. But we're never in a rush.)
