The Hobbit Hole XIV - Hill and Water Under Sky

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Those aren't low carb, though. Whole grain, yes...low carb, no. South Beach isn't low carb.

Doh! I forgot you were on South Beach and not Atkins. Never mind. . .

They still taste good, though! :)

Just finished lunch. Had two grilled chicken quarters...lol, guess that means I ate the back half of chicken? Also a a half a large red organically grown tomato from our garden with a spoonful of blue cheese dressing and a sprinkle of cheddar cheese and a small sprinkle of fake bacon bits (a major indulgence, I really try not to eat too much of anything thats just obviously crap without ANY nutrition to it, but I love 'em!)

Sounds like a good lunch to me! A few of my tomatoes are ripening...dunno if they'll be any good, since the bush is REALLY messed up, but at least they're tomatoes.

I think I'm gonna ditch here soon. Not accomplishing anything at work and I just wanna go to bed.

"I'm going to frame my response with 2 points. 1) I like ya bunches and always will, and 2) nutrition tends to be a more acrimonious topic than religion or politics. As such, I'm going to gently take issue with some of the points the rocket-scientist (*not*) nutritionist who put together that list makes."

Sheesh, if that was the gentle version I'd hate to see the rough version :)

Yeah, nutritional debates can definitely get acrimonious! In my experience nutritionists argue about the most basic things, which has made me skeptical of any and all claims. Some of the criticisms of that list you made I agree with, some I don't have an opinion on because I haven't done sufficient research. For my part I prefer to get my omega-3 from cod liver oil capsules, and I'm not big on soy, either. In any case I mainly posted that to encourage 2J to look into nutritional ways to adjust her HDL level, since she didn't seem too crazy about the idea of taking medication for it.

"I tried the new low carb Doritos while on vacation"

So they are out! You say you didn't like them--how do they taste different than regular Doritos?

One of the things I started when we started Atkins was flaxseed meal. I think I originally heard that Atkins made you constipated (heard it from a dwarf around here) and wanted to prevent it with Steve. I didn't tell him why I made him a bowl of this stuff, but I went ahead and had some with him and we both love it.

Several weeks later (maybe a couple of months or so) Steve even commented about how he didn't like missing his cereal in the evening!

The stuff has 2400mg of Omega-3 in it, per 2 tbsp.

Hmmm, interesting. If I remember right Atkins has a discussion of flaxseed in that book I linked to.

That's why I wish I had my pre-Atkins numbers...I bet the total might not be so high, but my HDL (good cholesterol) woulda been lower and the triglycerides and LDL were high.

But I don't know.

I'm very pleased with my HDL...75 being 15 points higher than their highest recommended of 60.

I even did a survey on the American Heart Association webpage and it said even with these numbers my risk was low.

I'm forging ahead doing low carb...I'm not letting him put me on pills.

"I'm forging ahead doing low carb...I'm not letting him put me on pills."

That's probably what I'd do, too, as long as there was no imminent risk. I prefer to avoid pills when I can. I figure pills are treating the symptoms whereas diet is getting more to the root of the problem. That's just my personal thinking and preference, though, not medical advice. Whatever you do make sure you keep monitoring your cholesterol levels!--I'd be vey sad if anything happened to you :(
