The Hobbit Hole XIV - Hill and Water Under Sky

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

My head churns with ideas, my friend...only there's a voice in my head that keeps telling me they are all stupid or pointless or ridiculous..

But when I crossed the finish line of my marathon back in 1991, that voice started getting weaker!

We'll hold you to that.

It would be fun, and just the type of thing we envisioned when we planned the addition!

We're just about an hour from downtown Boston, and there are tons of things to do. I've never walked the Freedom Trail, and there are several museums I've not visited. The kids and I did do a Battle Road Tour that started out in Lexington, then went to Concord. It was fun and vey informative.

Great homeschool field trip, Corin!

There are so many natural things that have been made unnatural. Childbirth, for one (although, I'm sorry...I loved my epidural when I had Joshua.)

Breastfeeding. My goodness, what could be more natural? But in a relatively short period of time, our culture dang near forgot how to do it.

Now death. I've seen bodies so heavily made up that they looked like rubber. What's the idea? Make them look alive? They're not alive! Look upon a deceased person and be comforted! They are gone! You can tell! It's not horrifying...it's reassuring.

When we put it under a black light you could see hand prints from the embalming fluids...

I head to the doctor for my follow-up in a bit. Steve is coming home to go with me.

I agree...I think wakes should make a comeback. Being Catholic, wakes take the form of Memorial Rosaries the night before the funeral, and no one stays afterward, well at least hardly anyone...that's why that feast AFTER my aunt's funeral felt so weird. It was not the usual. I guess the discomfort of that was that it felt like my aunt was still with us. It might have been a little more understandable had she allowed an open viewing at the funeral, but apparently she was so devastated by the cancer, that she felt like it was best to let people remember her the way she used to be. Ah, well, that was her decision.

Our home Parish's Bereavement Committee did a 'dead spread' for the family after the the burial. I was thinking it would have been better to have done it immediately after the Funeral, then gone off to the cemetary later. There were a lot of people at the funeral who did not come to the burial and didn't stay around the hour or so that it took to get back to the Church for the luncheon.

Mama's first boss, when she re-entered the work force after raising her family was at her funeral and we didn't get a chance to talk to him. After being the Registrar at Southern Miss, where Mama was his Transcript Clerk, he went on to be the President of Delta State Univ., then returned to be President of Sou. Miss. It was very nice of him to come to Mama's funeral, and it would have been nice to be able to talk to him and several other folks we saw at the Funeral Mass who had not been able to make it to the wake the previous night.

If you had a labelmaker, you could do your own artwork and everything!

Do you just mean one of those label sticker kits, or an actual printer?

A printer'd be out of our budget at the moment...but we probably WILL get some paper labels and do 'em on my inkjet. It won't be perfect, but it's a start.

I just know that when I've dealt with family members in the hospital setting after making their loved one ready for their viewing...well, it's always been a positive experience for them. They always say how much they appreciate it and I always took a great deal of pride in it.

We went blackberry picking on Sunday, and though I got a couple pints, there were TONS of unripe berries. Usually by August, there are more overripe than unripe.

The berries are coming in nicely here, despite the short growing season. A couple weeks ago I discovered some raspberry and black raspberry bushes past the treeline I didn't even know were there, and I've been filling small buckets with them ever since. They're vey good! Pretty much picked all the ones that were big enough to eat that I could find now, though. I hope to find some more before the growing season ends!

"Personally, I can't wait for school to start either, but I'm sure in three weeks I'll be whining about how much work I have to do, how it's so hard, how I don't have time to read..."

I bet it'll be less work than undergrad school and you'll be complaining you're bored again :)

Well, this mornin' I felt like the clear word was "not yet." So I called the guy and told him I just couldn't make that commitment.

He called back with a lower price. I talked it over with the Missus and called him back and said "Let's make a deal."

mmmm...trucked...
