Eleventh Thread: Wedding Edition: The Hobbit Hole XI - No One Admitted Except on Wedding Business!
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, |
Still round the corner there may wait |
Home is behind, the world ahead, |

Let us know what the doc says, 2J!
I never managed to finish "Stranger". Too weird for me. I like "Prelude to Foundation", though. It goes well with the rest of the series.
The only thing I can think of that I eat that is really high fat is cream. I go through a lot of cream.
But I don't think that's it. I don't think it's diet related.
I imagine he'll put me on cholesterol lowering medicine...sigh. Now I'm really old.
But I don't want to have a heart attack or a stroke...
Bad ksen. Bad!
Time to go wait for the bus. See you all later.
I think so too. But I betcha he puts me on a diet anyways...which probably won't hurt. Just be BORING! LOL
Certainly not!
Wonder if that'd help ease some of the other symptoms you've had...palpitations and such. Or would that be related at all?
And expensive. You watch...he'll put me on a diet I can't afford.
That's been the biggest thing about Atkins...it really does cost more.
I dunno...sigh...
I'll know more tomorrow...I was so aghast on the phone with the nurse that I could bearly speak. It's why Steve is coming...If I get upset I won't be able to talk.
Well...if you're lucky, he'll suggest Atkins, and you can say you've been there - done that, and can rule out diet as a possible fix. Or maybe he'll suggest South Beach, which isn't hard to switch to.
I bet you he refers me to a Reg. Dietitian. I hope so. That would help me a lot. But whatta ya bet it's expensive food!
"Ma'am, you gotta eat chicken breast only." Three bucks for a couple of chicken breasts.
The chicken legs and thighs we cooked up last night were $3 for 10lbs.
I eat a lot of chicken breasts...but I buy HUGH packages and freeze portions. It's a little pricey, but not bad in the long run.
Speaking of food...time for lunch! Gonna go heat up my chili...
I know I'm probably obsessing on the wrong thing...
Wife keeps telling me that South Beach is expensive because she's buying stuff we haven't traditionally bought.
I have to keep reminding her that's because she doesn't count the money we were spending eating out, ordering pizza or "just picking something up" as coming out of the grocery budget.
With Nana joining the family and with Jr. discovering he prefers steak, eating out has gotten to be vey spendy.
Well, after we settled in to Atkins, I learned how to do it on a budget...but at first it really was expensive!
We don't eat out as much as we used to either.
Garn, do you think he'll make me start eating "butter flavored spread"? It's a molecule away from plastic, I say.
If your doc sez it will cause heart disease, bean him with the box fan. Afterwards, set a trap for him by asking him to explain the exact (biochemical) mechanism by which cholesterol "causes" heart disease. When he falls in the trap, bean him with the box fan again. There is no correct answer- there'll be a nobel prize for the doc who does establish such a pathway.
Second of all, statins are dangerous. Don't let the doc put you on one. The most recent studies have hinted at a vey elevated breast cancer risk. But because the drugs were so 'successful' at reducing heart attacks, the studies were cut short... so no good conclusions could be drawn about the cancer risk. There's also a host of really nasty side effects from immune system problems to depression to (get this!) heart *failure*.
The researchers can't explain why the statins work because the reduction of heart attacks were *independent* of statin dose and *independent* of original cholesterol level- they brag about the latter on the TV commercials. That raises flags for me.
Thirdly, have your doc do triglycerides, too. And instead of dwelling on total cholesterol, focus on the ratio of Total/HDL. If the ratio is less than 3.5 you're at low risk for heart disease. The range where "elevated risk" begins is somewhere around 6 or 7 depending on the expert writing the scale. You want a big picture from your doctor- something that takes into account family history and your gender, not a knee-jerk script for a statin.
Lastly, don't stress. Do some reading. For the other side to the hyperbolic cholesterol paranoia, search out a guy named Uffe Ravnskov. He is compiling research to make a case against the 'cholesterol will wipe out mankind' theory.
Dang girl. I want you on my side...
Mostly it just requires a lot more shopping, since I'm eating far more vegetables than I used to, and those can't be stored forever like processed foods...
And you're right...ordering out adds up! And I don't do that much now.
Not all "margerines" are created equal. I use Smart Balance...no trans fats, and it's tasty. Works like butter, too, when it comes to making omelets and things.
I loved the class. Taking it was probably a big mistake.
It applied the simple rules of logic to scientific endeavours.
What an eye-opener.
These scientists/researchers/doctors/epidemiologists are hardly impartial, open-minded disciples of science.
They are driven by ego and money. They are sheep. And cowardly to boot. They'll masage their data till it is 'acceptable' for publication. Revolutionary thought is not allowed, lest you be tossed to the 'fringe.'
Consequently, I take very little of what they say at face value.
But what can I possibly be allowed know? I don't have a PhD. ;)
