Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
...Hill and water under sky
New verse:
|
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Darn it, why didn't I steal Dad's Jerry Pournelle books? I need to do some military SF research!Maybe all you have to do is ask questions here.

JenB, are you researching battle sequences, or just a style of science fiction?
You know, you could check out the used book and thrift stores ... should be plenty of Niven and Pournelle and Haldeman for the asking.

Looks like you, Ruthy and I dodged the hurricanes this time! Corin might have a problem, though!
We're gonna be driving into MA early on Monday morning, so we're gonna get the leftover rains, but not the winds, thank goodness!

I'm just researching the style, really. Trying to figure out how's it's done. The story I'm thinking of writing has a sort of military setting, although I'm not sure it's true military sf - the hero's part of a mercenary unit but gets seperated from them pretty quickly and the focus of the story isn't on the unit, or the tech, or the battles.
Sigh, but I don't have a lot of money to go spend... maybe I should stake out the B&N this weekend.

Yeah, if I can figure out what my questions are the place I'll ask them will be here. Only I don't know what the questions are yet.

Oooh, cool! That's a good idea. I don't think the campus library has any fiction... I'm so used to not really having a library around...
Hmm, I might just run out now... if I could just name the "princess", I would...

As for military SF ... do it your own way!
In fact, I have asked various helpful folk here for assistance. When the time comes, I want to be sure my fiction has a military air, but not a contemporary military feel ...

Watch it now, I wear Birkies! I even wear socks with them in the Fall and Winter cause my feets get cold! WooHoo! I'm sure I'd be the bane of most other Birkie wearers' existence though, and I'm dang proud of that!

Okay, so I'm allergic to nuts.
Oklahoma City-based Neighbors Coffee is recalling nearly 20,000 pounds of nut-flavored whole-bean coffee because it contains undeclared almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts and pecans. ...
The recalled coffee flavors are Almond Amaretto, Banana Nut Creme, Butter Pecan, Caramel Nut, Chocolate Hazelnut, Chocolate Pecan Fudge, Cinnamon Chocolate Almond, Coco Cabaret, Coco Mocho Nut, Dark Roast Hazelnut, Dutch Chocolate Almond, Frangelico Creme, French Vanilla Almond, Hazelnut, Hazelnut Creme, Holiday Cheer, Honey Maple Praline, Mochadoodle, Nutterfinger, Pralines and Creme, Snickerdoodle, Sooner Smoother, Southern Pecan, Toasted Almond and Vanilla Nut Creme.
What part of "nut" do people not understand?

I think most of our HH FReepers are out of the direct path. Yeah, but we're going to go out for ice and batteries tomorrow anyway. It'll be a depression by the time it gets up here but our area lost power for a week last year when the storm came through. And it was only a tropical depression.
Prayers for all those in harm's way.
