The Hobbit Hole XIV - Hill and Water Under Sky

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Uh, yeah. You were.

I mean, why do you think I watch anime? You aren't gonna find hairstyles like that on guys in RL, after all...

I'm kind of surprised to hear their written English isn't up to their spoken English. I always thought they went through basically British schooling. I've only worked with two Indian guys myself. I could understand both of them pretty well. We argued about whether "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" was imperialist :)

Well, I don't think all Indians get that kind of schooling.

Anyway, the Indian guy I work with now is very nice. Big anime junkie and the most experienced at this job, so he's the go-to guy, particularly for Linux-related issues.

I dunno, when I had my hair long it was kinda like that :)

Actually I watched that show for the setting and action and fx, and because it came on when some other shows I liked came on. It had no plot to speak of. I guess I don't actually need a plot to be entertained by a fantasy/sf/superhero show as long as the premise is cool enough.

Tomorrow is my comic-book trip--joy! So far my shopping list includes:

Amazing Spider-Man back issues
Kenshin
Fruits Basket
FMA
Eva if Kenshin, Fruits Basket, and FMA unavailable
New Teen Titans issues recommended by Bear

Hmmm--what else. . .

I suppose some of them may get taught British curriculum in Hindi without a strong emphasis on English.

You practically have an anime club at work! Reminds me of my brother's job at Lucasfilm. He says it's like working at a sf con :)

FMA is not available. The manga isn't licensed and the anime has not yet been released.

Don't buy any of Kenshin or Fruits Basket out of order. Some series you can jump around a little, but not those two.

Nah, only three out of four of us. One of the guys seems to dislike anime. One of them really prefers dubs. Sigh... But he's promised to loan me Eva so that's all right.

Sigh--guess I'll have to cross FMA off the list then. . .

I was planning to look for "Kenshin" #1. I just hope it isn't collectors-item expensive or anything. But if I can't find it, won't having watched the cartoon help me catch up?

75% animeniacs per department is a pretty good percentage! Better than my old job when me and this other guy were the only two sf people in the department. But it was nice having at least one other sf person around. He had previously worked on the special effects for "Star Trek: Next Generation" and had gone to Writer's Digest School to write SF. We ended up forming a SF writers/filmmakers club.

No, they're similar but you really ought to read them in order. The first volume is the same price as the rest, $8.

I know you said your B&N doesn't stock graphic novels, but if it's been a while, check there anyway. The one I used to go to went from three small shelves of Spiderman/Batman/X-Men comics to a whole wall of manga, manwha, and American comics. The manga phenomenon really took off in the last six months.

(Actually, I've been having a lot of air quality issues. Hmmm)

Get one of those "Ionic Breeze" air filters from Sharper Image. They're pricey, but they really DO work in clearing crud out of the air. And over the long run, they're cheaper than other air filters because they use less electricity, you only have to wipe clean the collector plates, and are silent.

The same red chinese company that makes them for Sharper Image is now marketing an almost-identical generic version for about $150 at major big-box stores. I guess Sharper Image had an exclusive for a few years, and now there's competition.

The things work amazingly well. I got mine after a buddy recommended it. His summer alergies are vey bad. He said if he'd have known how well the thing worked, he would have bought one years ago.

Do you have any suggestions for a workplace that's just covered in dust, air conditioner sucking the water out of the air, and stuffy, too? I think that's my main problem.

Get one for your desk, too. As long as nobody steals it. It can't help with low humidity, however. You might need a separate desktop humidifer. Try to create a bubble of breatheability around you.

Cool, glad it's not too pricey. Is it in a big volume with many issues collected together? I think those tend not to go up in price as much as individual issues, fortunately.

I'll check the B&N, but I'm not too hopeful. The Green Bay B&N isn't a regular-sized B&N with its own building. It's squeezed into one small store in a mall, about the floor space of a 7/11 convenience store, say. Their fantasy/sf collection is smaller than what I have in my house.

I should check into that, too. I've been sneezing a lot the past few weeks when I have the windows open. I seem to be allergic to something outside but I don't know what.

Ok, once the semester starts and I see whether I'm actually ever at my desk, I'll make a decision. Thanks!

That's not saying much, I think I have almost as many unique titles of SF/Fantasy as a decent-sized bookstore...

And mall bookstores are better than you'd think! The Waldenbooks I used to go to had a bigger section than the Borders and got stuff in faster too.

LOL!--I imagine :) How many sf/fantasy books do you have anyway? Offhand I'd say mine approaches 200, not counting comics.

I've been to Waldenbooks that had a decent fantasy/sf section. This particular B&N is skimpy in that section, though. They're more weighted towards other sections.

Morning! Izzit Friday yet?

Am in early to tackle my crazy to-do list. But we're going to a nifty concert this evening: Bob Dylan & Willie Nelson. Should be good.
