Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I'm thinking that I need a career change. Maybe I should try for a job as a wal-mart greeter... "Hello... welcome to Wal Mart!" Yah... I could do that.

Think of the benefits: no pager, no cell-phone ringing in the middle of the night... no "unresolved" issues from day to day... all in all its sounding better all the time.

I used to think the exact same thing before I "retired" from nursing. Sometimes I really wondered if the $30 an hour I made was worth it...I mean, think about it. I could accidently kill someone! One mistake could ruin my life and someone else's life and their family.

I just don't see that happening as a Walmart checker...

Don't you have to go to school a long time to earn Walmart Greeter's certification, though? :)

No Wal Mart in Gig Harbor, we drove 'em out of town, remember? How about bartender at the Grill?

And yet... that's the funny thing about this bidness.

In my interview for the job [admittedly several promotions ago], many many moons ago... my then-to-be-boss asked me something about "how I felt about working in a high-stress environment".

My answer, almost verbatim: "I'm coming from a job (the USCG) where if people don't do the right thing at the right moment, then people die. I'm not sure what you might think "high stress" might be in your office, but I'm reasonably sure that at the end of the day, nobody leaves in a body bag."

She just blinked. But it seemed to work. :-)

It's a parody of anime-fans, and anime in general. Only it's not downloading and I think the file's fake. Someone said it was real, but someone else said the anime's not available yet... I dunno.

Once the semester starts, apparently the setup gets shut down. It can be gotten away with over the summer because nobody's using the resources.

That parody sounds like it would be funny if it was real--if it's not real it should be!

If the setup gets shut down after summer, it's good you started work a few weeks early :)

Well, IT-type folk, the fun is about to start rolling our way ... dunno if y'all have seen this yet ...

Service Pack 2 for Windows XP will replace the old Internet Connection Firewall with a new firewall that will be enabled automatically after installation and every time thereafter when you switch on your desktop PC.

The new firewall will block the Activesync and Connection Manager ports on the PC, unless you configure it properly ... meaning that all the Pocket PC devices you have won't be syncing right ...

<sigh>

Ramius, do they want you to come over there and do the CtrlAltDel for 'em?

Goodness gracious me ... you didn't look that wicked to me, Master Sea-man!

So here's where you FReepers hang out, huh? Just thought I'd pop into the Hobbit Hole and see what was being brewed up by the Hobbit Heads of State;)

On reflection... there's an interesting thing about work stress that is worth some exploration. Even though there is little about most day-to-day corporate bidness that is *truly* a life-or-death situation... there remains nontheless a sensation of fight-or-flight on the part of many users that escalates easily to boundaries that are far beyond the immediate needs of any problem at hand...

Interesting... that.

Hmmm... there's a book to be written here...

Say, Rose... There's a buck to be made here... waddya think? :-)

Hey there! Hobbit Heads of state never do ~anything~ official like. All titles are purely ceremonial. The biggest decisions often being what to have for lunch.

I actually said something along those lines to the Walmart checkers now and then...'bout how lucky they were.

I guess I'll go back into nursing someday when the jedis get older...but I hate to be in that precarious position.

Steve is on call tonight to collect samples if it storms...I've been watching the radar for him. He's been asleep for a couple of hours already.

But I gotta go to bed, I'm beat.
