The Hobbit Hole XIV - Hill and Water Under Sky

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Heh... sounds a lot like my 11-year-old brother, who this week fell from the Swing of Doom (a rope attatched to a tree branch down a steep hillside) and bruised a couple ribs. Apparently he's been all but blowing it off... sigh...

*sigh*

You're doing much better at the getting stuff in the mail than I am. I'm ALMOST there, but still haven't made it to the post office. And the hours there mean it's hard to get in on a work day. Probably tomorrow...tonight I don't have time to run out since I'll have a houseful of musicians in a little while and I have lots to do before they get here.

I shouldn't worry about it, but I'm still kinda upset that I'm late on them when I said I'd try to get them out earlier.

Had a rotten afternoon anyway, though. We're installing XP SP2 (just came out) on some systems, and while I was doing my own, boss came in and saw that I was reading while the computer rebooted. I got the "we need to talk" thing, and he said that this time of year we have a lot going on, have to be doing three or four things at once, and I should find better uses for my time, etc. etc. But what are we doing? System installs and upgrades! With lots of lag time! So...I spent the afternoon getting a system set up and refrained from reading while waiting for blue lines to crawl slowly across screens...why can't one of the three or four things I'm doing be reading, if I'm keeping an eye on things at the same time?

So I'm feeling guilty, but angry because I shouldn't have to feel guilty. Why is it that some people freak out at the sight of a book? I remember one time a few years ago, I was taking a computer class, and brought a book with me to read during breaks. The instructor came back after a break (was walking up toward the front), and before I had time to put it away, he forcibly shut it and almost knocked it out of my hands. As if I was doing it IN class or during something important. Grrrr...

I'm gonna be good and not challenge this, of course...but I'm ticked off by the illogic of it all, especially when some others play games if they're waiting for something to finish.

And I'll be calmer in the morning.

We're doing SP2 in two weeks. Just as the semester starts. The guys are not happy, but apparently we don't have a choice... there are some firewall issues they have to resolve before we can install it.

Man, it's clouding over. I was going to walk but it looks like thunder to me.... got dinner started, so I'm free to do what I want and what I want is to get to a bookstore and see if the new Fruits Basket is ready yet. I could drive... but that's no fun.

I used to get in trouble a lot for reading at class/work, too. I was always coming up with new ways to sneak it in because otherwise I'd go nuts with boredom. One of the best ways I found was to keep a book open to the page I was on sitting next to my PC, glance down periodically to read, then turn the page when no one was looking :) I always got my work done anyway, so I usually got away with it.

It's clouding over here, too. The temperature actually dropped down to 60 and there's stormclouds brewing.

So is the stuff you're doing at work now familiar or new?

Hi ALL! I'm home, caught mostly up and had some lunch. I went after work and binged on clothes. Got tons of stuff, which I really needed... New outfits for work that I haven't mowed the pasture or painted in, no oil stains, you know....

New. I haven't done much sys admin stuff. It's pretty minimal, though, there's one staff guy and four of us grad students, who do 20 hours a week each. Two of us are Windows and two are Linux but there's overlap. Maintaining accounts and backing up the servers is the biggest part of the job, and all four of us do those things.

Drat, it's thundering. Cooler, yes, but I can't go walking.

I need more shirts! Most of mine are plain t-shirts. Boring. I need a couple slightly-dressy, semi-professional type shirts.

I kinda like walking when it's near-rain but not quite raining and there's a nice cool breeze.

Are you backing up the servers for the whole school's system? That'd be like a lot of power, bwahahahaha! :)

So do I, but thunder and lightning aren't fun. At this time of year I like a light rain on my face, too. It's invigorating.

If the storm blows through in the next hour, I'll go out afterwards... at least I've got a nice breeze going.

No, we are responsible "only" for the CS department's servers, network, accounts, etcetera. There are five servers we backup up... and of course today, the grad student account server went down. For some strange reason the guys were eager to get it back up...

I'm going to get root in a few days, when I need it. Had a "misuse of authority will get you kicked out of school" lecture. Apparently it was the toned-down version. One of the guys told me he was warned that his ears would be nailed to the walls if he got caught doing what he shouldn't.

Tick - tick - tick - what on earth is that weird noise outside my balcony door?

Oh. Hail. Little tiny balls of it. Cool. Good thing I didn't go a-walking.

Now we all know that being an Evil Overlordess you would never misuse authority :)

Five servers sounds like a lot to me! Only thing resembling backup I ever had to do was when I supervised the night shift of a data entry department and before locking up for the night I had to start the process of backing up the data on those ancient reel-to-reel magnetic tapes (this wasn't that long ago but I guess those tapes are still useful for that kind of thing). I don't know if that's at all like what's involved in the type of backup you do.

Light rain is nice. I like thunder and lightning while sitting on a porch though probably not walking in, especially not if I'm carrying books that might get wet. But one of the coolest experiences I've had, though somewhat scary, was when I was walking in the sand down by Lake Michigan and I got caught in a sudden downpour with thunder. It started raining and blowing so hard and got so dark I could barely get off the beach and climb back up the hill to the sidewalk. Meanwhile lightning was crashing all around me. I was somewhat worried I would get stuck on the beach in the storm. But I got back to the sidewalk, and in retrospect it was pretty fun. Probably wouldn't have been as fun if I'd got stuck, though!

Hail always makes me worry my windows are going to get busted!

Sky's gotten a little brighter here but it's still vey cloudy to one side of the sky. I'm hoping for a big storm later--haven't had a good one in a while.
