Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
...Let them pass! Let them pass!
(Note to dwarves, this is only meant figuratively)
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

My mop broke last night, too.
If I do find it, I gotta wash it by hand.
What a wonderful life I lead!

One smarmy chap actually said, "How is your house going to benefit us?"Sounds like a prima donna. You prolly should have said, "well, with that attitude I guess it won't!"
SSQ has a major distrust of architects because his Dad used to have to try to build what they drew! ;o)
We bought Chief Architect and I drew my own plans for the addition. SSQ did all the load calculations, since it's a two story and we have to deal with snow-loads, etc.
There are some nice 'desert' plans on the internet. This site has some nice Southwestern designs. You could buy a set of plans like this, then just employ a general contractor, or do it yourselves, subbing out the things you are not comfortable with doing. If you Google a search for house plans there are a ton of sites. You could prolly find one with straw bale walls, if you looked, or just do the whole thing with ICF's!

Does anyone ever do the design themselves, get someone to draft it, and then have an engineer or someone review it? This does happen. You have to know what the requirements of the local/state jurisdictions are. AZ does have some strange requirements for commercial buildings.

"I'm not sure "Rewrite" reminds me at all of the two Ramones songs I am conscious of knowing..."
Heh, most of their songs sound the same to me, so I couldn't tell you which one it reminds me of. When I went to their concert once they were so loud I couldn't hear their singing :)
I'm unloading "Undo" now--I don't think I've heard that one.
BTW, you've got mail.

Bilbo and I just had whole wheat tortillas with homemade refried beans and homemade salsa for dinner. I never woulda attempted tortillas before...I'm learning to make a lot of things from scratch just because I can't find the healthy versions at the store and I want to be sure I know what's in 'em! That's a good thing, I'd say, especially as it saves me money.
Let me know if you'd like to try the tortilla or salsa recipes in a few weeks when you hit Phase 2!

How long did the tortillas take to make? I go through a lot of those, could probably save some money if I learned to make 'em myself.

Does anyone ever do the design themselves, get someone to draft it, and then have an engineer or someone review it?YES! There are design/build firms that will take your basic design and draw up some plans for you. Most of those firms also have engineers on staff to handle any out of the ordinary stuff.
