Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...That none have seen but we alone.

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I've got some in my office (one especially in my department) that's a moveon.org sort of uber-liberal.

We don't talk politics anymore. Some months ago I wuz buyin' him a beer at da waterin' hole and he went totally non-linear on Bush, and in a surprisingly mouth-lathering shaking and shuddering sort of way.

He really, honestly, believes that Bush intends to suspend the constitution and set up some kind of religious taliban government (except Christian) with Ashcroft as a new ruler-Pope and end all elections. Anybody found to be non-christian will of course be jailed and beaten and tortured into submission. All of this of course is to further the hatred begun by right-wing bigots against muslims.

This is no joke. They really believe this stuff.

And plenty of people on this forum thought Clinton was going to suspend the Constitution and send us all to concentration camps in order to bypass the 22nd Amendment. Or if Y2K blew up. Or just because he felt like it.

Nuts and weirdos abound on all edges of the political spectrum.

And I have Mush-Brained Boy, who sits in the cubicle in front of me. He worships Michael Moore, thinks I need to watch American X so I can learn about prejudice and being black in America <rolling eyes>.

'Cause, you know, I don't know nuffin' 'bout prejudice and being black in America, seeing as how I'm twice his age and been black all that time.

He told me not too long ago that Fox News was rotting my brain, and that I need to listen to more NPR.

Sigh.

However, he and I do agree on some things. Homeschooling and vouchers, for one. And more modesty for young girls' clothing, for another.

I would agree that there are nutballs on all political spectrums... and yes, there were some pretty nutty ideas about His Highness, Clinton.

I would submit for your approval, however, that it really does appear that the left has gone way, way beyond any sensible boundary in their hatred of Bush. They would do *anything* to see him defeated, including the loss of any victory in Iraq and elsewhere. Makes one wonder if they would be for or against another strike on the U.S.

Oh jeez... you're BLACK??? Well, that changes... uh... uh... hmm... nothing at all. :-)

hehhehe... I am for some reason compelled to relay a story from my best friend on the Polar Sea so many years ago... His name was (OK, probly still is) also Dave. He grew up in a typical suburban middle class neighborhood outside of Chicago. He was the only black kid at his school.

One day one of his friends comes up to him and says: "Hey Dave... some of the guys have been talking smack about you... and hey, you're my friend... so I wanted to hear it from you first. Dave... people are talking about you... they're sayin'... they're sayin' that you're black."

Dave said he spent a good half hour rolling on the floor laughing.

He was (and I'm sure still is) a good conservative republican, and one of the best orators I've had the privelege to be around. Together we had a blast blowing away the libs on the ship. He had a clarity of speech that was astounding. I lost track of him after he left the Polar Sea, but now and then I keep trying to find him on the net, to no avail, so far. Of all of my lost friends I miss Dave the most.

Hey Dave... are you a freeper?

I'm up way too late, and am heading off to bed... but just wanted to remind you of the phrase "Broken-Glass Republicans", coined to refer to Republicans who "would crawl across broken glass" to see the Democrats defeated.

I've seen and heard a lot of extreme rhetoric on both sides. It makes me want to mentally step back and reassess where the truth might actually reside.

Good night!

If you get any ideas, let us know.

Thanks, but we're doing ok. I was just complaining. When we arent on the road we pretty much stay inside. When we are on the road there is no solution, just misery. Appreciate the thoughts though.

But, is it a dry heat?

It actually isnt up this far north. Near baghdad now is approaching 120-130 degrees. We are hanging in the low hundreds, but I think all the vegatation here gives us a higher humidity. G'nad is right, after 105 it just plain sucks no matter what.
