Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...That none have seen but we alone.

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Um... since I think they're all offshoots from the PCUSA, which was formed by the merge of two other denominations, I'd say they're all equally 'related'. The PCA and OPC are probably closest in terms of doctrine and government.

"Wow... long, long ago when I was in confirmation class, we were taught there were only two major divisions... the northern and the southern (I forget which organization was which) on account of the Civil War."

From what I've read the Civil War as you'd expect split a lot of religious groups along north/south lines, and meanwhile the secular intellectual currents of the 19th century tended to find homes in the Ivy League and spread from there throughout the northern urban churches. So as a northerner I'm always happy to hear there are still some conservative northern churches left!

"Really? I thought you hobnobbed with George Washington in primary school."

When my Mom and I would get to teasing each other about our ages I used to ask her questions like, "So, what was coming over on the Mayflower really like?" :)

Depends on which denomination is in control on whatever thread you lead him into, I suppose...

When was the merger, about? It sounds like this was a bit later than the period I'm familiar with. The paper I wrote touched on the influence in the US in the late 18th century of the controversy over the Scotch Independency movement--here's a little info:

Presbyterianism Established, Meeting Of The Westminster Assembly

Nevertheless, amid all this apparent prevalence of Presbyterianism, there was a stubborn tradition in England of another set of antiprelatic views, long stigmatized by the nickname of Brownism, but known latterly as Independency or Congregationalism.

I was wondering if maybe that played a role in any of the divisions you mentioned, but it sounds like maybe that was a little earlier than you're talking about.

It's amusing to me to see the squabbles over there... the only person I discuss theology with is Catholic, and we never argue the way the people on FR do.

Yeah, I don't know much about the history of Presbyterians between John Knox and, oh, the 1980s.

Yes, but that won't matter to some over there. You probably float if we put you in water, right?

ROFL! Me neither :) I like learning, though. I like studying the English Reformation and Colonial period. This book is a really good introduction:

Vernon Louis Parrington, The Colonial Mind, 1620-1800

I've done my best to avoid those threads. But the other day I posted on something I thought was an unrelated thread and now I seem to have been added to somebody's ping list without being asked. Sigh. . .

No! My specific gravity is denser than water--I'll drown! I'm not a witch--really I'm not!
