Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
...That none have seen but we alone.
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Classic state-job joke:
For months, this guy sees a road crew out his window. Three guys. One digs a hole. Another plants a tree, then the third guy fills in the hole around the tree.
One day he just sees two of them out there. One guy digs a hole, then the other guy just fills it back in again. He walks outside and asks them why they're wasting so much time...
Well, one guy says: "The guy who plants the trees has the day off."
It would be funny if it weren't so true...

No, the difference is that US183 was done by TXDOT, while Ben White is being done by the City of Austin.
To: Wneighbor
It is weird. It seems like sometimes something is looking done, and then the next time I'm there it is torn up again. Didn't I read a couple of years ago that the city had fired everyone involved, and hired a whole new crew to fix it? I started a while ago to believe it is some kind of psychological terrorism at work.

I got the true version of that story.
New college president started workin' here the same day I did. They moved from east Texas where there are big trees. College president's wife wanted a big oak tree in the back yard. College paid $3500 for this big grown adult oak tree. Hired a company to come plant the tree.
The cost for diggin' the hole for the tree was $500. The wife didn't like where the tree was. She had 'em come back and dig the tree back up and move it. Another $800. She had the tree moved 4 (yes FOUR times) So, the tree got planted a total of 5 times.
The tree now lives in the original spot of the first planting.

What kind of lily is that? It is gorgeous! Um....red...
Honestly? I don't know. I just bought the packages last year at either Lowes or Walmart. I was right surprised at the color. Remind me and I'll dig you some up in the fall.

I can track my life in Austin by the road construction on 183... and now that 183 is complete (as far as we go on it, anyway) they've torn up 620. 'Course, when they get done with that it will be a toll road (that I'll never drive).
To: HairOfTheDog; JenB; ExGeeEye; Wneighbor
I appreciate everyone's insight. I get stuck in the forest sometimes and fail to see the bigger picture.
Everyone involved is local so they can make plans for another dinner.

You are kidding!!! I did not know they were making 620 a toll road! That is just so WRONG! I used to live off 620! There is no way to get anywhere you want to go on that end of the lake without going 620!
Of course, when I lived off 620 it was still mostly 2 lane - all the way from 71 to almost 183! It still went across the dam then. It was rural.
I tell ya what! From the time 620 becomes a toll road I will be traveling 281 to 71 to get to my favorite swimming hole! There is another way around to get to that!

You gotta do that Hi! Ed here's got her hands full with that little angel! Yes ma'am.
What would Ed and the angel do if a truck came along and splattered your brains all over the interstate? Where would you be then?
Yeah honey, what if you get run over?
