Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...That none have seen but we alone.

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

The coast of Maine (southern) does have quite a few towns.

But, then, I'm always lookin' at maps and studyin' towns and their sizes on the maps.

Yep, that helps put things in perspective.

I guess I was partly just wondering because there are soooo many people even here at FR that will start slamming northeasterners as cultured city slickers, and no amount of protesting will get 'em to believe that there IS wilderness here, and a lot of us are right smack dab in the middle of it, or close to it!

My town is the biggest one in the area, and it's less than seven thousand, I believe. I grew up in a town that's more like five or six hundred...that's where my Dad still lives. And it's bigger than, say, the place where we go to play music on Friday.

Gosh, I love it here.

Hey! PA is not cities! Even Pittsburgh is barely a city. Philly is evil, but PA is a nice, rural place.

'Course we're not all cotton plantations either. ;-)

Yeah, you've got tobacco fields and bayous, too, right? ;-)

Heh... Growing up I always thought of Washington as all mountains. I *love* mountains. Imagine my disgust when Ken moved me to Kennewick! LOL

Actually, I don't picture that for Vermont or Maine... But yeah, I do see New York and Pennsylvania and Mariland and D.C area as only their cities.

Yep, I know I tend to do that, too. Maybe not so much for New York, since I have friends from the other parts of the state...but certainly for places like Maryland, and to a great extent PA and other midwestern states. I guess it's only natural, since those are the parts we tend to HEAR about.

But it bugs me when there are threads here about outdoor stuff, and if I DO comment, my opinion doesn't count, 'cause northeasterners don't know about that kinda thing...buncha cosmopolitans...

So you say! I am very pleased that you still have the Amish and the Mennonites.

Pittsburgh pop 334,563

Tacoma pop 193,556
Seattle pop 563,374

(Tacoma is too big for me ;~D)

Yeah, we tend to think of Colorado and Montana and other western states as being almost nothing BUT mountains.

T'ain't true!

Rosie! You cultured city slicker you! LOL /sarcasm

Really, if you ever look at maps you can get a good grip of population density at a glance by looking at just how many highways there are and how dense they are. Places with not many people don't need many roads on the map. Places with lots of people got 'em running everywhere like crazy. Simplistic, yes. But, it makes sense. :-)

Bah. Where I live is very suburban. We're fifteen minutes from anything. And we drive through some lovely deserted country to get to church every week.

Heh...like I said, my town is MAYBE 7,000.

NOW does it make sense that I have trouble driving in big scary places like Burlington, VT, population 38,889?

Actually also, I traveled on business quite a bit to some rural areas of mid- New York and Pennysylvania so I've seen a lot of that too.

Heh... Growing up I always thought of Washington as all mountains. I *love* mountains. Imagine my disgust when Ken moved me to Kennewick! LOL

Sonya's Dad married her mother, a native German, in Germany. Told her that Washington was beautiful and Green like Germany, with Mountains. And then they landed at Fairchild AFB in Spokane. She thought she'd been lied to when they drove for 6 hours through Eastern WA, and she actually cried.

Colorado is that way too. My first flight into Denver was a surprise!

I know. I wish I could stay longer, but it was a stretch to get a Tuesday morning flight as it was!

Maybe we'll come across a free hour or two. :-)

From MSN Encarta...

Miami-Dade county had a population of 2,253,362 in 2000 and is made up of 31 municipalities of which Miami is the largest...

Traffic here is bad for a reason. :-)
