Even Massachusetts allows homeschoolers to compete on school sports teams! A family over in Bedford sued and won that right for all homeschoolers! I met the lady last year. She's not a real firebrand or anything, she just knew her kids wanted to play on the school sports teams and didn't see any reason why they shouldn't. She has to send the school board the information about their grades, etc., but she'd have done that anyway.
She pays any extra fees the other kids would have to pay to be on the teams, etc. but all her kids have participated.

Check with your district about the sports. In PA, it's a district by district decision - I have no clue what it's like in VA - but often those people have a lot of discretion and might just be able to help you out.
