Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
A sudden tree or standing stone
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Nah, stick with his old stuff for now. Anything after
Starship Troopers is a lot different than his juveniles!
Stranger In A Strange Land has a lot of interesting concepts ... as Jen will tell you, The Man got his freak on whenever they would publish it.

Yah, I'm on my ATT/Comcast cable connection here. The hotel must have a T1 or something to Alter.net. But Alter is one of the major backbone providers?
I'm stumped.

Nah, stick with his old stuff for now. Anything after Starship Troopers is a lot different than his juveniles!I kinda wanna read his stuff in order is possible, though I'm sort of dependent on what my library has available. After being introduced to Stranger and Starship Troopers by secondary sources, I started with Puppet Masters, Double Star, and Door into Summer, and then read one of his juveniles. Other ones of his I own I've randomly collected at rummage sales are Revolt in 2100, Methusaleh's Children, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, The Star Beast, and Time Enough for Love. Not sure what I'll read next.

Wedding is at noon...my house is only about 15 minutes from the Beach House (assuming the traffic on the bridge is clear)...so given that they probably want folks to show kind of early, we'll probably want to leave at 11 or so. My guess.

I don't know why, but I've always had the impression that Alter.net was one of the lesser of the major backbones; I can't really express anything that that is based on, though. Just a feeling I guess.

Steve and the jedis are going to a friend's house in the morning...same friend with house and a horse...they got their HomeSat dish too and Steve and his friend Andrew (Celeste's husband) are going over their to help them get it all adjusted and set up. My HomeSat came two days ago...Steve wants to learn from this other guy's experience before trying it on ours.
Well, I'm off to bed, guys...I'll log in tomorrow, let you know when OT gets here.

We'll have to see...I normally get up fairly early...6:30am or so. But who knows what might happen...I might stay up too late and end up tossing poptarts at everyone the next morning, calling it breakfast.
It happens with the Jedis now and then!
LOL!!
Good night!

Yeah, they're probably a lesser player than some of the other first-tier backbones. But I stopped really paying attention after UUNet was bought out by Worldcom.

On another note... I had a different sort of experience on my drive home tonight...
It was just about sunset, and there's this cemetery that I drive by between there and here... and I noticed that there were hundreds -- and I mean hundreds, maybe well more than a thousand or far more -- full size American flags posted on the grounds of the cemetery. It really grabbed me, and I pulled in to have a look.
I drove in the long entry way amid these hundreds of flags, and stopped in a sort of central area where they have a set of tall flagpoles. On the flagpoles where the US flag, a WA state flag and a POW/MIA flag, and all around the base was a really gorgeous marble memorial to US Military losses in combat. They had the names of all of the local veterans engraved there.
It was really something remarkable, and it really left me speechless. I've driven by there literally thousands of times and never stopped. I glad I did.

It sounds like a moving experience, indeed. Rose and I are planning to drive down to San Antonio tomorrow, to put flowers on various relative's graves. Both her father and mother are buried in the cemetary at Ft. Sam Houston; I wonder what we'll see there?
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
Sounds like a worthwhile trip. :-)
Well... seems to be about time to bail out. Starting the dwonhill slide tonight...
Goodnight... :-)
