Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
A sudden tree or standing stone
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

I know you are joking, right? :-)Girl, I'm from Mississippi, of course I am!
Sometimes, when riding in the car, we'd get behind the big trucks hauling pine logs on the way to Hercules, Inc. in town, and we'd have to close the windows because those suckers were flying all round the logs!
SSQ used to rent a house behind my Great Aunt's house, and several big old roaches used to sit on the cross bar holding up the overhang over his back door and just WAIT for him to open the door. When he did, they'd fly in over his shoulder into the house. ARRGH!! ;o)
We hates them, precious, yes we does!

Of course, I find Suzi's funkles downright useful to get caught up myself. I'm glad I'm useful for sumthin!
The kids and I just finished 4 and 1/2 hours in the back yard mapping the terrain. SSQ wants to do the figgerin beforehand about how much dirt will be dug us for the new basement, and exactly where else in the back yard that dirt will eventually go!
We had a transit, a laser level, and a laser distance finder. We did roughly 8' squares, and there were something like 72 of them. We had to determine the height, relative to the foundation wall at the back corner of the house, at each point, and we'll compare that to the floor level of the existing house. Fortunately, the ground level at the back of the house is almost 4 feet below the floor level right now, so we only have to dig down 7 feet at the most in that spot to get to below the level of the new concrete floor in the basement. Down at the back, we'll only have to dig about 3 feet down since the ground slopes down so much there.

You know, ladies, our Nawthern brethren and sistren don't know what a "palmetto bug" is. I am constitutionally incapable of inflicting a .JPG of such a thing on this beautiful Hobbit Hole, so I will post a link to a picture of a palmetto bug.
This is a palmetto bug.As the caption indicates, they fly, swiftly and surely. They also swim, and seek water. And maybe my fear exaggerates their true size, but I've killed 3" ones in my house here in Austin. In my parents' home, which was set up off the ground on cedar pillars, they were bigger, I swear!
