Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A sudden tree or standing stone

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Most sailors in the time of Aubrey and company... didn't actually know how to swim.

No, they didn't know how to swim. Many of them were either pressed, or "quota men," pulled out of jails and debtor's prisons to serve aboard ship. The bosun's job was to make them obey, by administering on-the-spot corporal punishment.

(Honestly, it is amazing to me that the British Navy could even rule the Channel, with the way their sailors were treated.)

In fact, Jack Aubrey was one of the few sailors who could swim well (unlike Hornblower, who just liked to dance around naked on deck under a seawater pump spray); Jack is noted for diving in and saving over twenty men who have fallen overboard. That doesn't count the number of times he has to dive in to save Maturin.

As for swimming ... I always said I wouldn't get on a boat until I could swim ... but a very large ship might be a blast ...

"It is where I come from."

LOL! I agree :) Your description reminds me of a time when a coworker in the office down the hall loudly combined the name of the Lord with that particular curse word, so loud you could hear it several aisles down. I just about got up and punched him out right there in the office, but I restrained myself on the grounds that Jesus probably wouldn't want me putting the guy in the hospital in His name. That really rubbed me the wrong way, though--there is no excuse for doing that in the workplace.

Looking back, it amazes me how I'd jump into any type of water as a kid, LOL! One time I swam out in this lake that was full of weeds so tall they came up just below the surface, so that I was swimming through the tops of them. At some point I noticed the water getting so deep I couldn't see the bottom through the weeds, and I was about halfway out in the middle of the lake, maybe a quarter-mile from shore getting tangled in weeds in water over my head. I decided I'd better turn back then, LOL! I also remember swimming in some pretty muddy water. Didn't seem to make any difference to me as a kid! But these days I'll look at something like that and go, hmmmmm--LOL!

Wow Corin, when you said Andy Kaufman was back, I thought it was an off-the-wall joke I didn't get!

Andy Kaufman Returns After 20 Years (WTF?!?!?!)

Sorry 'bout the WTF Rose... it was in the title ;~D

"The Love Boat. . ."--LOL!

Your account of the British navy reminds me of Mutiny on the Bounty :)

OK - If the thread is all asleep, it at least needs a night light.

I was up past my bedtime. Am gonna feel it today. Was very hot yesterday- it was a long day in the sun. Promises to be another one today. Hopefully the wind will stay calm and we won't have to eat dirt again. I get to come home tomorrow- wheeeee!

Ah, OK! I've seen some pictures like that...I guess I'm just not QUITE geek enough to immediately associate "case" with "computer case", so I was confoosed...

Man...I only WISH I had that much time on my hands! Wouldn't use it THAT way...but it's be nice to have. ;-)

Morning.

I'm being sent on a business trip next week... this thing keeps getting better and better... now my boss wants me to drive up that morning. I'd have to be out of the house by five. I'm not a morning person! And I hate going places I've never been at that time of day.

Gooood morning! ALMOST Friday. At least it's nice out again! For the moment, at least. They're predicting thunder storms again.

Having flax pancakes for breakfast...an easier recipe than last time. They ain't bad.

At least then you'd miss some of the worst of the traffic!

I know...not much of a consolation.

I get sent on really boring business trips. Why can't we have business contacts in Hawaii?
