Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A sudden tree or standing stone

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

We're pretty much caught up now.

This one hit at 2pm, and we got a special beta of new (working) patterns at... 3pm. [sigh]

This one spread really, really fast. I got a call from my network engineer at like 1:50, saying that [imagine an Indian accent here] "What I am seeing is some traffic that is very unusual. Maybe a virus is trying to spread itself."

Four... count'em... four minutes later... offices start dropping off the WAN like flies. Dang... just dang...

We had everything back up and mostly happy inside of an hour... but we're still chasing a few of them. Yikers.

That sounds like a long day! Glad it sounds like you mostly got it fixed, though. Someone tried to hit me with I think nimda today but fortunately Norton caught it.

Fargin' bastiges is right... This one has lots of lefty liberal Bush-hating comments buried in the source code. Worms made by liberals. Seems appropriate somehow.

Hey guys, wild day here too (but then that's the norm here). Got an interesting call today from "Heather" at Dreamworks SKG -- appears they're filming a sequel to "The Ring" (Ring 2 or something). They want to film the outside of my office building. Shoot. Thought they wanted to offer me a contract! Thought my ship had come in there for a minute!

Well, my office building is kind creepy (in a Stalinist sort of way), so they're at the right place.

I was wondering when they were going to start. I understand it's a whole series of films from Japan.

Not sure that it needed a sequel. Creepy movie.

EEEK!

Well, before I get any scarier images dancing in my brain, I'm going to bed.

Keep my friend Merijo in your prayers everyone, she's having surgery tomorrow to have part of her large intestine removed. She's a single mom with 2 girls, just like me, so it's tough to see her going through this.

These newer worms that spread themselves over the net are really scary. No email, no action by the user required at all... the worm just finds computers on the net and off it goes. It spreads in seconds.

Fortunately, this one doesn't do any real damage. All it does, believe it or not, is to try to set up the victim computer as a spam server. Fortunately, that sort of thing is easy to block.

Someday somebody is gonna write the perfect worm. It will exploit an unknown and unpatched vulnerability in Windows, and/or Unix and/or Cisco routers. It will spread throughout the whole internet to almost every machine in a matter of only a few minutes. It will sit there and do absolutely nothing for a while, so that nobody catches on that anything is wrong. Then it will strike everywhere at the same moment. And it will take the Internet down in its entirety. For days.

I never saw The Ring... but hey... having movies made in/at/near your office is pretty cool.
