Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A sudden tree or standing stone

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I think chives is more related to bulbs....onions and garlic...but I could be wrong.

I just looked that up--wow, that looks like a beautiful book! The illustrations are online here:

The Boy's King Arthur

It sounds like it was written in 19th-century English, too--that would be neat, I bet!

BTW while I was in college I had a nice opportunity to take a class on Arthurian literature under a Tolkien scholar who was in our English Department. We surveyed the major treatments of Arthur in literature and film--here is our syllabus:

Week 1: Introduction and Marie de France (Sir Lanval)

Week 2: Chretien de Troyes (Yvain)

Week 3: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

Week 4: Sir Alfred Lord Tennyson (Gareth & Lynette

Week 5: Mark Twain (Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court

Week 6: T.H. White (The Sword in the Stone)

Week 7: Selections from Sword in the Stone and Camelot

Week 8: Marion Zimmer Bradley (The Mists of Avalon

Week 9: Selections from Excalibur, etc.)

The "etc." in the last week turned out to be Monty Python :)

Good evening everyone!

I'm no gardener, so I won't offer advice lest y'all come after me for indirectly killing off all of your plants!

Last Samurai was actually really good! Occasionally Cruise manages to overcome his deficiencies, like in Minority Report. This was one case. He actually didn't look as stupid as I expected in samurai armor.

Actually the movie was really, really good. If I hadn't been exercising I might have cried over the ending.

Swordfighting... it was no Kenshin, though when the samurai charged the machine guns, it sent tingles up my spines. Battles were great. It was a Hollywood-movie, no question, but beautiful nonetheless.

We're having a gorgeous thunderstorm here. I expect we'll lose power at any moment, so don't expect to see me around tonight.

I found an anime convention in Denver, in early September. I'm going.

UGH - construction has just increased my commute by half an hour.

Yeah, we noticed there was a lot of that going on, especially on Rt. 28 going both ways. Fortunately, they weren't working on Sat. or Sun.!

Maybe we can do an Animoot during one of your school breaks, if your folks don't mind your coming here intstead of home. We'll figure out a time when we've gotten the house to the point where there's room for company!

We're supposed to get thunder tonight and into the morning. And heavy rain. Hm...if we lose power at work, we can hang out and goof off.

Wait...we do that a lot during the summer anyway. Never mind! ;-)

Actually we'll be busy with computer labs and upgrades in a very short time. But this week should be nice and quiet.
