Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
A sudden tree or standing stone
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Well, I knew I was among friends :)
One of my cousins, with a big bad B.S. in English, mentioned having read Beowulf in college; sensing an opportunity, I asked some questions and deduced he was unaware of The Thirteenth Warrior. So I rented it and brought it over. "You might like this," quoth I. Half an hour or so into the thing he almost stood up and shouted "It's Beowulf!"
Fun!

My son's middle school English teacher told him she had never read Tolkien.
I said "then she's not a real English teacher."
He told her...(and she still passed him).

That does sound cool! They should get Eowyn to read it.

--Eowyn, adding singing to her list of talents (swordplay, horsemanship, and -ahem- cooking for 87-year-old rangers, in the language of Beowulf).

Seriesly. How could you get a degree in English without reading Tolkien?
Mail order?
Maybe it's cuz she graduated from Yoo-Vee-Aye.

I think for Hair'n'ecurbh's wedding, someone ought to get up and give the "mawwaige" speech.

Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Accept, Scorpions... torn jeans, sleeveless flannel shirts, dago-Ts... beatin' the crap outta punks wearin' makeup...Out of those bands AC/DC and Ozzy are okay, as far as 80s neo-metal goes; and you forgot Metallica. But like Ruthy I'll take the classic stuff--Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.
