Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
A sudden tree or standing stone
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

I'm not sure... it's been 25 years at least since I read the book. However... I don't think the "liberation" of that world was quite as hopeful in the book as it was portrayed in the movie.

Interesting links! I think I knew about the microfiche project, but the other one is new to me. Going to have to check it out further I think!

Rosie: I bought some canned blueberries today. ~I know~ they're not as good as fresh, but you do what you have to do when you can't get 'em like you like 'em.
I don't drain the peaches, but I *think* I drained the blueberries. Can't remember.
Can't remember diddly. Can't remember squat. Yep. Nuthin in muh noggin.
WN: Mom got here okay and is spending the night. Elf-boy got out of bed soon as he heard the doorbell. Took him to just now to get settled again. Mom is reading him a story right now. She will be taking him to school in the morning. He is absolutely thrilled!
'Night johnboy...

I heard a while back that some of that stuff was on microfilm/microfiche but didn't know where to find it until someone told me tonight. Unfortunately I see the DCs on microfiche are no longer available--I need to find a used copy of that :) This will sure beat shelling out my life savings to find Golden Age comics! :)

I read about this project (at least, I think it was this project) years ago in Comics Buyer's Guide. If they were on CDROM instead of microfiche, I'd go for it!

I'm hoping they get them on CD-ROM, too. I've only read a few Golden Age comics--some classic DC, Timely, and Fawcett reprints, mostly; always wished more were available. The ones I'd want to read most would probably be Superman, Batman, Captain America, and Captain Marvel. I'm also interested in some of the strips and pulps--have some reprints of Flash Gordon and I've also always been interested in Tarzan, the Shadow, and the Green Hornet, among others.

Occasionaly, DC's 80-page giants in the 70s would reprint a Golden Age story or two, such as a Green Lantern or All-Star Squadron (JSA) story. I was more interested in the Silver Age SF reprints though... Adam Strange, Tommy Tomorrow, Space Ranger, the Atomic Knights... loved reading those stories!
