The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I turn Okie loose on the "golf course" to graze a little before turning back. He stays right with us though. He's never tried to run off.

Cindy, when you find yourself psyching out on falling, in the night.... change the scenario and force yourself to think of how to get out of the nightmare you've imagined!.... instead of falling, imagine you pull the horse up, press your weight down into your heels, sit deep in the saddle, breath, smile, and give him a rub and pat.

Cool. Tonight I think I'll do some jumping:')

Not sure how sensitive Okie is.

Are you talking about his flanks? Yes and no. When I'm getting on and off sometimes my leg drags a little. He's used to it.

Now one day a couple of months ago I had let him get a little barn sour (he's sweet now) and he didn't want to go the direction I wanted to go. I just lightly popped him there with the reins to see what would happen. I got a butt lift and a fast few seconds ride:')

Oh and thanks for the exercise info. I've got it bookmarked and going to study it tomorrow.

Speaking of worming I have to get a picture of Okie the next time. I tried this time but I couldn't get it fast enough. He tries to spit the wormer out and shows his teeth. He gets it all on his lips before he swallows and licks it off. It's a perfect "got milk?" commercial.

Awesome sign. The planes go right over our house to the airport. I'm waiting for GB to visit. I've already decided what I'm going to put on the roof.

Didn't know about the timing for the wormer. I've just been popping him whenever. Sometimes before we ride but usually after and some days when we don't.

Well Okie is a one way shyer and it doesn't matter which. He's so sure something going to eat him and then the next time looks at me like what's your problem when I start with the "easy boy's and tightening the rein in anticipation.

I was using Quest, but my vet has had him on panacur lately. Seems we have some unique kinds of bugs around here. I double dosed him the first time and seemed ok.

I have a make believe horse in addition to my real one. Some friends gave her to me awhile back when I was laid up. :')

Becky

I don't think I ever thought about not riding after worming, but we use the daily wormer now and really don't think about it.

Good morning everyone.

It's a cool morning here, if it stays that way I will ride this afternoon after church.

The horse that I have here that I'm riding for someone is on that daily wormer. I've never thought about using it. My vet (he's and older one, so maybe he's not up on stuff:) doens't recommend it. He says it's hard on their liver??? and you have to use a paste sometime anyway because the daily stuff doesn't get rid of bots? Ever hear this? He routinely checks my horses for worms and since I've never had a problem, I just keep doing what I have been for years. I'm older too:)

Mornin' Becky

I'm old school too and HATE using "poisons" on anything around here (hence making my own meds) but obviously, with a "herd" of horses you need to worm. I was reluctant to use the daily wormer, but my vet and daughter (both younger women) talked me into it. The daily dosage is so little that I guess its up for grabs whether a large dose every couple weeks versus a small dose daily is worse. So far I've seen no adverse results (or worms, hehe). I've heard that there are some worms not killed by the daily wormer, but I guess I have to read the label.

P.S.
I'm off for a ride before the temps rise. It was sweltering yesterday.

Where are you at? It's going to be an unseasonably cool day here today. This summer has been strange as far as weather.

Have a nice ride. Take some pictures:)

Morning (yawn). I have to get moving. I'm going to a new church this morning. Speaking of church my SIL was telling me about one that she
going to check out. Evidently it's in a barn and was started by riders. Sometimes they meet there and ride afterwards and sometimes they hit the trails and have services outside. Ever heard of anything like that?
