Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I've usually waited like you till the next day after worming... but I like the news from Empress on that!

Yeah. My son and DIL were here at the time. Charlie is putting a gooseneck hitch in their truck so she can haul her friends Thrus to our ride at Arrowhead.
Anyway I asked them about riding after worming and they said they wait 2 days. I'll be sure to tell them they don't have too.

I rode Trash past a big No Tresspassing sign today hanging on a fence. I thought I'd been by it before, but it snuck up on him and he jumped sideways so fast and hard, my arm hurt for a few minutes because he pulled it so hard.
Then when we came around the end of the shop Charlie had the bed liner of his truck laying in the driveway, it was just suddenly there! He spun completly around and tried to take off. Took me a while to get him to go past it.

OK! Discretion and judgment is always called for... if they ~look~ like they feel poopy I'd still wait. I usually worm mine in the evening, when they are going to be in and quiet overnight if it makes them feel yucky.

I remember the first time I rode Beren near the road. He was beautifully calm about a train going by 20 ft away, and then decided that a yellow painted curb was the scariest thing ever. Sometimes I wonder what's really going on in that head of his. :)

Is what I've wondered is if the wormer upsets their stomachs, or if they are wormy the worms letting go as they die. I've seen horses (not mine) colic after being wormed because they were so wormy. Or at least that is what I was told was the reason for the colic.

I was in a parade once on an Arab. Carrying the American Flag! He almost shut down the whole parade because he didn't want to step on a white line painted on the road:)

I quite agree. Remember that with the length of the horse's digestive system, that it's going to be quite a while before anything given orally is going to kick in.
Bay ~should~ be fine, but he won't be, I think he thinks blowing and snorting at new stuff is his duty. He was actually the flag horse in a parade once.... Big huge American flag. But I picked up a little orange flag on a stick at that play day we had and it was like I was trying to kill him. Different flag, completely different situation in a horse's brain I guess ;~D

I usually worm on a Sat. afternoon because I usually don't ride on Sun. I just forgot today that I had done it till I went to get Rusty and saw the empty tubes laying in the wheelbarrow.

Colic is one thing that's dreadfully difficult to predict, especially since individual horses and their management vary so much. Nothing is impossible when it comes to horses. That being said, most of the wormer-related colics I've heard of have been related to horses with extremely heavy worm loads, and have been related to specific drugs, namely the main ingredient of Quest. Now, it's a great drug, but shouldn't be used in horses that haven't been wormed regularly.
I've had horses spook at rocks that they have ridden past 100's of times. They usually do it when I've gotten real comfortable, taken my feet out of the stirrups to stretch my legs.....:)

I've got a friend that told me I probably didn't need to worm as often as I do since I have been doing it for so long. She says there's probably not a worm on my place. Is that true?
I've always thought that was more why my horses look so well more then because of what I feed. I think worming is very very important. Does it hurt to worm them if they really don't need it?

I think new worms are brought in all the time by flies and mosquitos and things aren't they?
