Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I thought horses could eat apples. Is it just because they are green? Maybe a neighbor can let them ripen and do something with them. I don't know a lot about preserving.
They do like them. It's just WAY too many apples.... Left alone with a whole tree of green apples, they'd colic, and they could die from such an overdose, I think.
That makes sense:') Like a kid in a candy store. Isn't it amazing how far they can stretch those already long necks and reach up to get stuff ?:')
Okie barefooted tonight :') The ferrier said everything looks good now and he's ok to go until I start putting him on roads a lot.
Good luck tryin' him barefoot! Let me know how it goes. Relatively speaking, we have such soft unrocky ground here, that if you can do it, most anyone should be able to, 'cept in Bay's circumstance, that is.
He only wanted to shoe him for a few months to begin with. Still not sure what the problem was but my vet said he was the best around and to trust him. He will still be checking him every 6 weeks and trimming and if problems will put them back on. The ground hard around here and rocks on the private road. We'll see. At least he can help me pay for part of his new trailor:')
I just need to keep him on the grass more now I guess. I would have just left them on because, ah, well I guess just because:')
Pictures of the mare:
When I first got her:
Now:
Tell the truth now:) do you see any progress??
Susie watching the chicks:
And, my scary trailer, that I have to get the mare into today to take her for shoes. Not sure how that will go:
Becky
I think she does look a little thinner - looks like she is losing the extra fat over her shoulder.
Your trailer doesn't look scary at all, it's all open inside!
That trailer doesn't look too bad. Put a feed bucket up front.
It's a 2 horse slant, so yes, it is pretty open. I usually give a horse that doesn't like to load a bite AFTER they get in. If I put it in the front really long horses can actually get to it and get a bite with only their front feet in, so I don't put anything up there till they are in and the door shut. Then I give them a bite thru the window.
Yesterday at the vets, Harley acted up again, some men helped with got the job done faster. But I just hate that. Makes me feel like I did when my kids acted up out in public:). I wanted them so bad to stay and watch Rusty get in. I just untied him from the side, thru the rope over his back and told him to get in. He walked to the back and got in:), but of course the men had walked off. Oh well. Once this weekend is over (our town is having there big festival, Green Corn Festival & Parade and we will be down there at our new building all weekend), Mack will be home and he is going in that trailer, the horse, not Mack:) everyday till he gets in good.
I thought the mare looked less bulky around the shoulder area too, and had a tighter underline.
Well, I don't have to be there till 2, but I'm going out now to see how she will load....fingers crossing:)
Becky
Did you see the Bixby Bulletin today??? That is my son on the front page:), working on the building Mack bought in downtown Bixby. ARe you going to the Green Corn Festival this year. If so come by there, we will be there all week end, 2 doors west of Scotts Hamburgers.
Becky
2J has been posting wedding and reception pics in the hole... 2,329 and 2,344. I don't think she's done yet!
We still don't have our official pics yet!
Had you ever been in a little plane before? Mack has a pilots license. It's been 25 years since I've been up with him. I'm not big on planes:). We flew to Vegas about 3 years ago. My brother lives there. I'm going again in Oct with my daughter. Her company is having a confernce there then and I'm going. I told her she may have to deal with her mother being drunk on the plane...LOL...I think that's the only way I'm going to get my self on there:) Didn't care for flying at all.
Becky
Oh, Reba got right in the trailer. So she got show sheened and groomed. I will probably leave here around 1:30.
Becky
I am a pilot also, commercial, multi-engine and flight instructor ratings. That is what I went to school to do originally. Took some other side turns and got out of it... with a little regret about that. But I hope to get current and fly again as a hobby at least, maybe teach again.
But ecurbh hadn't ever been in a little plane before!
Good for her!
Oh, one more thing I think will be interesting.
I had the vet draw blood on Rusty to do a complete blood work up or whatever it is called, to see if anything shows up there on why he doesn't sweat. Several people have told me that if anything is wrong with a horse they can tell from this and that I should do that with him. I was surprised because it was only $40 dollars to do it. I figured it would have been alot more.
Anyway I get the results Monday. I don't know if I want something to show up as long as it's fixable, or for everything to be OK, and leave me wondering about him. He is doing better, but on really humid days still has trouble.
Becky
Oh wow:) I;m impressed.
The last time I went up with Mack we were with another couple in one of those planes you can do stunts in???. Anyway they did something I think it was called a stall, negitive g's, the dirt flew up and we came out of the seats....the thing is they didn't warn us first that they were going to do it. Scared the crap out of me. Right before they did it some buzzer was going off, and I kept asking what is that buzzer, and Mack and the other guy never answer. We were all young and dumb then, I don't think he would do that sort of thing again, wonder we didn't ever kill ourselves:). Mack is not current either right now, but has been talking about doing it again. But that is a very expensive hobby, even more so then horses.
Becky
It is expensive.... teaching again, as part-time as it always is in this part of the country, would be an affordable way to spend more time in the air. And it's fun.
That buzzer would have been the stall warning horn - would have let you know you were about to stall, if you had know what it was trying to tell you ;~D
