The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

She did pretty well for a 3 year old dog that has never had a game bird in her mouth. She was very suspicious of the frozen/thawed (and rather whiffy by noon) ducks, so we worked her with the pigeons. Even with them, she would swim out and then circle them a couple of times like a shark before she grabbed them and brought them in. Just to show that she isn't a complete idiot, I did a couple of long marks with a bumper . . . and of course she retrieved that with great enthusiasm and even came to heel and delivered.

I'm going to get a Dokken imitation dead duck and a can of waterfowl scent and work her with that. Also a couple of freeze dried pheasant wings so she can get used to that smell as well. One of the trainers at the test suggested a live pigeon with its flight feathers cut -- but I don't know how to get one, other than some bird seed, a cardboard box, and a stick with a string attached . . . < g >

Great pictures:)

The plane was a great climax.

I didn't get to see the wedding. Sorry. I was off looking at the building.

Speaking of buildings...Mack left the camera there so I won't get any pictures tonight. But I have to go to town in the morning to get gas in my truck. Taking horses to the vet tomorrow afternoon for routine stuff. I'll get the camera then and take pictures and post tomorrow. I just want you all to see them before Thurs afternoon. That's when Stan will see her. It's hard for me to tell, since I see her everyday.

I've got 26 chicks so far. I also want to take a picture to show you all of Susie watching the chicks. I swear I think sometimes she's going to blow up into a million pieces wathcing them. Is it nieave of me to think she wouldn't kill them on purpose:)????. I put them in a dog crate once they are ready to leave the incubator. She lays in front of it and just stares at them and once in a while paws at the door.

In this batch I have one little black one that keeps coming up to the door real close and sniffs noses/beaks with her. It's driving her crazy. I've never seen on do that before.

I had bad results using wings alone. Using just wing parts, Logan felt they were carrion roadkill treasures to be devoured or rolled in. He never did that with a whole bird, ever.

I bought fresh killed pheasant from a game bird breeder to train, and didn't over-train with stale birds. See if you can just get her hunting.... if you can get a bird down, you can use that bird fresh for a few more retrieves as a better training tool.

I couldn't bring myself to buy the birds live to use tethered or clipped. I'll shoot at them, but I won't torture them. Too much of a softy.

What does she do? Have you held one and ever let her be around them loose? - I assume she leaves the adults alone.... wouldn't surprise me a bit that with a little training she'd accept the young ones and even protect them, like a sheepdog would. Might not be naive!

Yes she has been around them when they are loose, and it does seem that at times she is herding them back to the barn when they get to far from it. But then there are times I have seen her snap at them. I don't know if she is trying to catch them or if that is part of her herding them.

In truth I think she would kill them. But I think (and this is where Mack says I am being naive) that at first it would be accidental. But once she did it, then I'm afraid it wouldn't be. I don't want to take the chance. Jack Russells after all are hunting dogs. She would be following instint.

But when I hatched the very first batch. She laid in front of the dog crate for weeks watching them. And when I gave them away to a friend she followed the crate all the way to her truck and I had to hold her to keep her from following. I swear I think she thought they were hers and she did not like them being taken away. After that batch I only let her lay and watch them a little bit each day. Kept them locked in a back bedroom. I didn't want her to be sad...LOL... for her babies.

Poor confused momma, sounds like.

An ex of mine's ~mother~ had Airdale terriers that were very protective of their chickens, who hatched and mothered their own chicks loose in the yard.... So you never know.

My friend's cat brings in snakes and things that aren't quite dead yet, through the cat door.... trouble is, she loses them there, under the couch, or under the bed ;~D

Course my cat would do the same.... bring in injured things and then lose interest... but he's too old fat and blind now to catch all but the dumbest and slowest of prey ;~D

The first dog reminds me of my horse, except that his coat shinier. Okie's brown was so dark, almost burnt red. Now it's just a light tan. Maybe the sun, or just being a horse? I would put some coat shiner on him but he would just roll it off. One of the draw backs of the pasture lol. I gave up on keeping him clean and just take care of the basics now. This weekend he is getting a bath though. I got teased the last time. Something about 100 dollars everytime he rolls over.

The horses are a lot easier to leave in the summer when they can stay out, than in winter.... they didn't even miss me. I have found a good sitter for them that can come by and feed. Good thing! I was up a creek for awhile looking for that. Gidget was with us and stayed at the beach house after we left.... They had to put her on leash when the plane came... that made her a little nuts even before it swallowed us up and took off!

I need to vent a bit:)

Why, oh why do people let horses get big BEFORE they teach them to get in a trailer! I don't understand that. People should know that sometime in a horses life it is going to have to get in a trailer, sometimes in an emergency situation too, so teaching a horse to load should be one of the first things they do when it is just a baby. It is so much easier.

I had to put Harley in because he is one that is going to the vet today. Luckily I started early, because I had a sneaking suspicion it might be a problem even tho he got right in when I brought him home. The girl I bought him from mentioned she was surprised how easy he did it. I know I should have been doing it before now too:), but like I said, I had a gut feeling it was going to be a battle and I was dreading it. I kept hoping that since he did it so nice then he would now.

It didn't really take me long, about 30 minutes, but dam, there is no reason for even that. He is standing out there in the trailer now. I'm not unloading him till I get to the vet, at least there I will have some help if he acts up. I'm hot and sweaty, and my shoulder hurts from his jeking backwards,,, ggrrrrrrrrrr:)

Oh well, at least he's in.

I sympathize! Trailer troubles scare the dickens out of me. When Bay was young and my friend had him, he'd hurt himself a couple times refusing to load in an older straight load that was really not big enough for him, but all he had.

He got over loading problems with the endurance racer.... lots and lots of trailering. If they can have a few good experiences, you'll get him over it if you're careful.

Oh, I know. Rusty didn't like getting in when I got him, but he just jumps in now. In fact if the trailer is hooked up and the door open, he has jumped in by himself when he is loose in the front yard. It's kind of funny. He'll get in then turn around and stand there and look out around the side to see if we all see him in there.

Harley was not bad. Just seem hesitant the closer he got, then would go flying backwards. I put a rope halter on him that has baling wire wrapped around the poll strap, so it puts lots of pressure on the the polls. That shut the going backwards down real fast. Then it was a matter of one step at a time up to it. Pressure, one step forward, release pressure, pat him, pressure again, etc.

I just had trouble keeping him from flying back since I had no one to stand behind him. When we loaded him where I bought him I was walking behind him. I think that's all it will take for awhile. But I was by myself today.

Yes.... by yourself it is a lot harder.

Have a good trip over to the vet, I hope he rides well and loads easy for the trip home!

Thanks, I'm leaving in about 5 minutes. The trip is about 45 minutes. Most of it is over good roads, so he should have a nice trip, and Rusty will be in there with him.

I can't believe it is June and I'm just now getting this done. This is the first time in about 10 years that I let my coggins expire and I'm late on their yearly shots and teeth floating. Time just got away from me this year.

I'm going to make another appointment for next week to take Rocky. I only have a 2 horse trailer. Actually, thinking about it I may just wait till the middle of July to take him, he doesn't get hauled any where anyway, and then just take my mare to be pregency checked all at the same time:). Sounds like a plan....LOL. See you all this evening.

I keep putting this off with mine:'( I found what I wanted but it's 3800 dollars. It's so hard for me to turn loose of that much money for me. We are going back next weekend to get it (I guess) if it's still for sale.

This spring, after clearing and fencing the new back forty pasture, we discovered a very prolific apple tree back there.

Well, caring more about the horses not getting sick than a bumper apple crop, I went out and picked all the apples I could reach off that tree, so now the horses are back in the back forty again. Just to be on the safe side, I hung the blue tarp of doom (very scary!) from the tree, just in case they might have tried to reach some of the high ones. They are terrified of blue tarps... I couldn't even get Bay near it. I think they will steer far clear of that apple tree. Do you?

Any idea on what to do with about 300 very green apples?
