Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Still round the corner we may meet...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

So Ruthy and I should be up there now!!! I love sunny summer days. But, we really had one today. I spent my 2 hour lunch break laid out in the back yard with a book. :-)

and after Saddam came crawling out of his hole it's like Moammar finally got religion on the subject.I think the Americans and the Brits had a 'come to Allah" meeting with him and he saw the light.

Technology is slowly making large armies obsolete. The problem we face today is from various form of infiltration tactics -- armies in the form of irregulars that are dispersed and hidden amongst populations in areas we are active in, and against which our most lethal weaponry becomes useless because the will to use it against general populations simply isn't there.
The only question of size really is whether we have the ability to intervene in many places around the world at one time. I'm not sure it is possible for us to maintain a military large enough to deal with that on a global scale.
I really don't think the issue is size. The issue is more that we haven't not developed completely effective tactics against guerrila or infiltration warfare. It is having the effect of nullifying our tremendous advantages in technology, training, logistics, and conventional tactics.

2 hour lunch break? I don't wanna hear about it.
To: Sam Cree
I'm doing good...well, I'm working too much and accomplishing too little in real terms for all the work...but otherwise all is quite well.

To get that 2 hour lunch break on Tuesdays and Thursdays I am at work before 8 AM and can't leave till 9:30 PM. Kinda balances out.
You don't want to hear my hours the other days of the week. :-)

I wonder how many people really believe that there is any above ground structure that can withstand an F-5?What about concrete stuctures? The folks who make the Insulated concrete forms we're gonna use for our basement walls claim the wall will withstand hurricane winds, though I know tornadic winds, though shorter are a LOT more fierce!

Well, just one more work day this week...and I'm leaving when the clock hits 5 tomorrow. I'm off to bed now. See y'all tomorrow!

I saw nothing where used to be concrete foundations of a subdivision. Bare earth left. I think they wouldn't be useful above ground. Most shelters here are concrete below ground structures though.

Evening folks! Just got back from our adventure, had a great time. Saw mountains and snow and waterfalls and lakes and rivers and fields and wildlife (both living and dead), among other things. May post some pics in a bit... if we can stay awake.

Well, officially, we have no school tomorrow. But, I get to spend the day with the advertising firm that I'm working with on a marketing project that got dumped on me. No rest for the weary. And no official days off without work.

"The only question of size really is whether we have the ability to intervene in many places around the world at one time" That's a big part of what I'm thinking. We may well need to deal with more than we are at the moment. And still keep people in the homeland.
I know the technology is wonderful, but am not sure it totally replaces lots of bodies.
Also, it strikes me that if we had more guys over there, it might be harder for the weirdos to raise their little armies and prepare to use them without us knowing about it, if that's what is happening. Not to mention keeping foreign terrorists and stuff from crossing the borders.
So you still are in the Seattle area, I guess?

PS: There's also a pdf version available on the 9-11 Commission website, though I'm not sure if it includes the follow-up questions after Dr. Rice's statement:
