Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Still round the corner we may meet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

That's true. After Tony Stewart did that that one time I remember them talking about how foul mouthed he was for several weeks. But, without radios... how do you suppose lots of 'em would be?

Probably cussin' up a storm.

Now the in-car audio feed is available on the Net too so NASCAR had to crack down on it. Ruin the family image, doncha know.

I think I've read "Call it Courage", but I can't for the life of me remember what it's about.

Here ya go:

Call It Courage; by Armstrong Sperry; Illustrations by Armstrong Sperry; MacMillan, New York, 1940; Newbery Medalist, 1941

Mafatu was afraid of the sea. It had taken his mother when he was a baby, and it seemed to him that the sea gods sought vengeance at having been cheated of Mafatu. So, though he was the son of the Great Chief of Hikueru, a race of Polynesians who worshipped courage, and he was named Stout Heart, he fear and avoided the sea, till everyone branded him a coward.

When he could no longer bear their taunts and jibes, he determined to conquer that fear or be conquered -- so he went off in his canoe, alone except for his little dog and pet albatross. A storm gave him his first challenge. Then days on a desert island found him resourceful beyond his own expectation. This is the story of how his courage grew and how he finally returned home exhausted in body, but strong and fearless in spirit -- truly Mafatu, the Stout Heart.

This is a legend. It happened many years ago, but even today the people of Hikueru sing this story and tell it over their evening fires.

And what was their plan for Frodo? Did they intend the Quest to fail? Boromir dead, the Fellowship scattered. Sam nearly drowns......and Legolas wants to go after Frodo....

I bet the original plan was for Galadriel to seize the One Ring once she got Frodo alone, but that got screwed up when Sam followed Frodo to the pool, so she had to come up with a contingency; hence the hit on Boromir, etc.--Boromir knew too much. . .

Or maybe Celeborn was the brains of the organization...using his wife as a front? Galadriel had her Ring so Celeborn wanted the One. But first he had to isolate Frodo.

MacLean wrote some other books you might be more familiar with - "Guns of Navarone", for one. Sorry, I read this after answering your other post. Oh, yeah, I've seen Guns of Navarone--good movie.

Once the semester's over, I should have time to think again! And read real books, and write...

And then we'll work on writing/drawing real fiction--not that stuff your teacher who doesn't like genre fiction assigns :)
