Sam, while you're here, I have a question...hope it isn't toooo vague!

Awhile back you had posted an except from a book...I don't know the full plot, but it had something like a guy finding a little boy or baby. Lovely prose, very descriptive. Does this ring a bell at all? I just finished Mysterious Island and I'm looking for something new...

That's the thing I like about it (and in the beginning it sounds like they are very similiar)...after the initial first few days, you feel great! You feel satisfied. And slowly but surely, the pounds come off!

Steve is just doing great...his whole personality is cheerful! And I'm having fun figuring out new ways of eating...ways that I intend to be part of our lives forever!

My best discoveries? Xanthum gum for making gravy...makes a GREAT thickener. A teaspoon goes a long long way! And flaxseed. Ground flaxseed makes a great hot cereal with a little splenda and cream. A quick breakfast!

I like Atkins pretty well, was on a version of it, by Drs. Eades a couple years ago, lost 12 pounds in about 2-3 weeks, went from 165 to 152.

I really think that just avoiding the obvious carbs, such as all the refined sugars and sodas, plus just sort of watching it on starches is pretty effective just by itself. That's pretty much what I do now, it works good, especially if I exercise a little and don't drink much. So, I am staying at around 155-7, which is not too bad for me.

Well, I see you really didn't need to lose very much after all, I have always thought that "slightly pudgy" was way an exaggeration.

My goal weight is 115, which is still 12 pound more than I weighed before Joshua.

I would like to get back down to what I consider my normal weigh, but my goal for now is 115 by Mother's Day.

I am goin' out to mow weeds and Canary grass in the pasture. Not much point in it, it makes no difference, but it is good exercise!

Ooohh, we had test day (psat's) for our homeschoolers back in March. The kids were in testing for three days. They sure were glad when that was over.

Oh, this is just plain old lifepac test day...just so happens that Matthew completed both Math and Language Arts booklets at the same time so we're just doing tests today.

I do want to have him achievement tested though...need to look in to that...

Yes, the book was "Refiner's Fire," by Mark Helprin.

It's still in print, easy to find, and very good.

Even better is "Winter's Tale," by Mark Helprin, set in Manhatten, includes a flying horse, time distortion and beautiful prose. I can't recommend it highly enough, it's one of my favorite all time books, and I truly love books. Parts of it make me kind of emotional just thinking about them. No one should go through life without reading it.

Also nice is the fact that Helprin is very much of a conservative politically, the guy's books drew rave reviews before the literary world figured that out. The guy who reviewed "Winter's Tale" for the NYT even said that he hesitated to write the review for fear of not doing the book justice.

The umbrella school we are in tests the kids every other year. It's nice to see that they are actually learning something when at times you just have to wonder. ;^)

Yes, that was it! I'm so glad you were able to interpret my description - I was afraid you'd just think I was crazy!

OK, so you may thing that anyway, but...

I checked the library database and they didn't have Refiner's Fire, but Winter's Tale is available from another campus. I requested it. Can't wait to read it! I remember being very impressed with just the little bit of text you had posted from "Refiner's Fire"...this should be a treat!

Can I rant, please?

So I'm sick. And it's raining. My ears are congested, and I've got a headache. I didn't want to do classes at all, but... ok, the first class went wel.

My writing class just sucked. For the last two weeks of class, we're all reading something that we wrote during class. Today was my turn to read... but first, of the five others, four were lousy readers and/or wrote hideous stories. 'Realistic', nihilist pieces of garbage.

So I had to read, with my stuffed up head and all off balance - I'm clutching the podium and trying to make out words - and the professor gives me grief because I wrote in a genre. It wasn't even SF, it was an action story, and I used rather ridiculous language on purpose because I was trying to write genre! Fedora, you've seen the story - I read the first scene from the one about the retiring art thief.

I can take criticism of my work on its merit, but to imply that I'm wasting my talents by writing what I like!

I just want to go home and curl up in bed and go to sleep. Wish it were Saturday tomorrow so I could stay in bed all day.
