Denver Synagogue Vandalized(Passion of Christ Blamed)

DENVER - A Denver synagogue was damaged with graffiti overnight. Swastikas were drawn on the synagogue on south Monaco Parkway.

The graffiti was in the doorway and across a sign. There were also several symbols drawn on the back wall of the building.

A holocaust survivor who saw the graffiti says it was almost too much to take. There was no official response available from the congregation Saturday, although several people who called 9NEWS to report the damage said that they blamed Mel Gibson’s movie “The Passion of the Christ” for rekindling anti-Semitism.

Members of the congregation will gather Sunday morning to start cleaning off the graffiti.

My father, a WW2 veteran, died 10 years ago. How is it that there are holocaust survivors still around to be quoted? I mean no offense, but how is that possible? I'm a Vietnam vet, and I'm getting long in the tooth.

For almost 9 years I have lived half a block from a synagogue. It has never been vandalized. If it were it would be the same bunch of idiots who have twice broken my car windows and those of many of my neighgors or the same bunch of idiots who carved their names into newly poured concrete or the same idiots who shoplift from the local stores or the same idiots who hang out in abandoned lots in the town and get drunk. Namely bored obnoxious teens who have no supervision at home and no self respect. At this point in their young lives they have no religion.

Are you implying that it's only Jews that have been persecuted?

How could you possibly draw that conclusion? Pointing out persecution suffered by Jews throughout history does not minimize persecution others have suffered. The point is, there is something wrong with telling Jews "you're just being too sensitive, you need to grow a thicker skin" when their synagogue was just defaced with Nazi symbols. If it were a Christian church, and it had been spraypainted with satanic symbols, would these people tell the people of that church to grow a thicker skin?

They were children then. Someone born in 1930 would have been in their early teens at the height of WWII. Certainly old enough to have a vivid memory of their experiences. And they would be 74 this year, which is old but hardly ancient.

After 60 years, I'd think they were getting to be scarce, like WWII vets, considering the treatment they received.
