Well I was raised a Catholic and my grandmother (Catholic) who married a Protestant was under the impression that her husband would not go to heaven. I found that very sad.

She had to get that idea somewhere. It was taught to me when I was a kid by the nuns in Sunday school. I never believed it though and consequently, I never believed much the Catholic Church had to say about anything.

Not a way to win the hearts and minds of young people.

I've never heard of Catholic Sunday school, either. Where was that?

Well, this "my religion is better than your religion" thing works both ways I guess. I was taught that salvation comes from God, and that faith is the fundamental requirement for salvation. I didn't know that, as a Catholic, I was not going to heaven until a SBC brother of a co-worker told me so.

I think salvation is much easier than people think, yet many who think they've got it are deceived. In my opinion, denomination is irrelevant. But I do think the gates of Heaven are opened and closed by the one Judge of all mankind. So everyone needs to be mindful of themselves and stop worrying about what other people think; they will answer only to the Holy One Himself.

The Catholic Church does not beleive this, or if it does it's not talked about now. I am currently in an RCIA program to formally become Catholic and the views are not as narrow as they were in the past.

They do encourage having a direct relationship with God, reading the bible and definately praying. It's really no different then the other more fundamental churches I've been to (except the music and the fundamental churches are more expressive during worship). Oh and the Bible is not taken literally word for word in the Catholic Church.

The real difference is communion, breaking of bread and wine. The belief that Jesus is among us specifically when this is done. The Eurcharist (sp) is taken literally and why not, Jesus is all around us all the time. The communion is beautiful and deeply touching (atleast for me). I just don't want to see Catholic bashing. This church has many flaws but there are a lot of good things to be had from it. It's more of a culture wrapped into worshiping God but not a Cult.
I have never and hope to never hear that non Catholics don't go to heaven. It's up to God to judge and decide.
I would dare say, I bet we'll find out that every good soul goes to heaven b/c God created us all so why would he destroy a soul that didn't receive his love.

I dunno.

This doctrine is still central to the RC church, it's just not taught as such in the more modern RC church. If one looks closely at the catholic catechism, it's there.
