Gibson was interviewed by the Herald Sun in Australia, and the reporter asked the star if Protestants are denied eternal salvation. There is no salvation for those outside the Church, Gibson replied. I believe it. He elaborated: Put it this way. My wife is a saint. Shes a much better person than I am. Honestly. Shes, like, Episcopalian, Church of England. She prays, she believes in God, she knows Jesus, she believes in that stuff. And its just not fair if she doesnt make it, shes better than I am. But that is a pronouncement from the chair. I go with it.

as the lone Protestant in a Catholic Prep School I won't ask why, but why? If your parents made you do it they should be made to pay you reparations. Actually, many kids in public school suffer the same type of ostracism, and it sure isn't fun.

Yeah, sorry. That wasn't why I posted it.
The 'church' is the 'body of Christ'.
The body is composed of many parts.
Only God can condemn a soul to hell.
If folks want to 'bash' Catholics, that's their 'bad'.
They can take it up with Jesus. (Jew)
In the end, we are all sinners.
Thank God for his Son: "the Way, the Truth, and the Life."

I agree with you redlipstick, have been a Catholic from birth, attended Catholic schools all the way thru college and NEVER heard it was church doctrine that non-Catholics could not get to heaven. This is just a reflection on your Catholic education, not an indication of what is the dogma of the Church. It is absolutely a dogma of the Church that there is no salvation outside the Church.
To: Cicero
no salvation except through His Church Is Catholic doctrine interpreting "His Church" as being limited to Catholic churches or the broader family of Christian churches. Just trying to understand.

The question was about doctrine, not ritual. Ritual would be whether the mass was said in English, Spanish, Latin, Hebrew, or Aramaic. Doctrine is what Mel believes, not how he worships. I believe how Gibson worships is directly related to his salvation in his denomination which is old school (pre-Vat2). Why doesnt he say mass in English? Does he believe he is hell bound if he does it in English? Why doesn't he respect the chair in this respect but not in the salvation of protestants? If he puts so much stock in the Pope, then why ignore much of Vat2?
Its just difference of faith. Like I said, faith in Christ is the root of all the matters for Christians.
I wont go any further because we all know how needlessly heated these threads can get. Thanks for the reply.

Keep in mind, in both the past and modern times that you would be thrown out of some churches if you pointed out that there are more devils/demons in Hell than just Satan.

" but with Christianity there is one unifying law--The Bible. It doesn't matter if you're Catholic, Protestant "
I went to Catholic School for 8 years ( 1958-66 ) and the only time I saw a Bible was at Mass on Sundays ! Remember we couldn't eat meat on Fridays so saved our fast food hamburgers until midnight to eat them . Like George Carlin said , and I paraphrase , " Those poor bastards still doing time in purgatory for eating a hamburger on a Friday " . 90% of the people I went to that school with are no longer Catholics . It took us a while , but we saw through the BS once we hit 7th grade .

Not to worry, according to the Catholics, just about everybody is going to heaven.
"The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; they profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day."
(Catechism of the Catholic Church, 841, quoting from Vatican Council II, Lumen Gentium, 16)

>Do you have a copy of the original document? Have you been able to compare it with the "new" translations over the ages? (Honest question, honest)<
I gather from the parenthetical comments you realize that question is sophomoric.A better question to you would be can you provide a list of documents that predate the Bible who's authenticacy to the original translation can be as well documented as the Bible.

My understanding is that "the Church" is the body of believers. I consider Catholics, Orthodox, and members of other Protestant denominations as brothers and sisters (whether or not they feel the same way about me). Oh, and I happen to have a very soft spot in my heart for our Jewish cousins. L'chaim!

I see one thing that is a stumbling stone...the usage of the term 'Church'. RC's some times use 'Church' to mean RC Church which they claim is the church of Christ (which claim was given authority by Peter - Upon this Rock) while protestants use the term 'Church' to mean the unseen Church of Christ, the universal Church of believers in Christ...One seems to be more of an organization and the other seems to be an unseen entity...

"There are those who claim that there are no such things as Baptism of Desire and Baptism of Blood, and that Baptism of Water is the only means of salvation. This is a serious error." But Mel never said that, did he? Baptism of Desire and Baptism of Blood are 2 ways to enter the Church along with Baptism of Water. But you still have to enter the Church one way or another.

I grew up with boatloads of Catholic's who ALL were taught I was going to hell....ESPECIALLY because I was a Lutheran.

If Gibson believes what the article says he believes, he is a Feeneyite, i.e., a heretic.
I thought Feeney was kicked out of the Church because of his disobedience, not because of his views. In any case, they let him back in.

Reformation Christians also believe in "pronouncements from the chair" we simply disregard usurpers to said chair.

I guess the University of Notre Dame could be considered a well credentialed Catholic university that is qualified to teach church doctrine. We were never told there was no salvation outside the Catholic church.
