Newbie Question
Posted on 02/09/2004 8:42:19 AM PST by USCG-RET
Folks, I don't know if I'm posting this correctly (or in the right place), but could some one explain to me the following:
Ping, Bump, and Freep (as in "freep this poll").
I just joined FR (after refusing to buy a computer for all these years) and I really enjoy reading the posts here.
Thanks

Ping is a way of alerting other members to something of interest - just like you got alerted to this reply

Very good.
And the other terms?

Bump keeps things active on the list of replys and article when you hit "browse." It acts as a reply, and so it stays on the list, and means more people are able to look at it.

Freeping a poll is a way for member to alert there is a poll being taken on another web sight and to go there and vote.
When someone wants to keep a thread up at the top of the message board they usually just print "Bump" on a reply.

Welcome! FReeper Lexicon
Thanks Jen. I looked all over for a FAQ before I posted (let me guess...it was right in front of my nose).
And thanks for the welcome too.
I think I'll be right at home here...

I don't think there is a FAQ page - if there is I don't know where it is either! ;-) But, there should be one that is easy for newcomers to find.
Be warned... FReepers like to play with newbies on this type of 'vanity' thread. I expect some will be along soon to put you through the FReeper initiation (hazing) process. hahahaha

WELCOME! I formally signed on last month after reading it for years....you'll love the lexicon. Like politics, FREEP ain't beanbag. But it is, without a doubt, the most stimulating site on the web. Glad I'm not the new kid on the block anymore! Enjoy it, because you will be a veteran soon enough. And loving every minute of it!
PS: My personal favorite is BTTT....back to the thread. You have NO IDEA what my mind conjured about that acronym until a kind soul who used it let me in.

I suspect you'll be back in a few hours to ask about:
- hugh
- series
- sister-biting mooses.
Welcome to Free Republic!

Erm, "Vanity thread" - post written by self, usually for the benefit of such (as opposed to the stuff we "take for the purposes of review" off other sites, such as news items)
Welcome to FR. I'm a FReeping widow... literally. Half the time I was with him, my husband was on Free Republic... now he's dead, I spend half my time here... heh. Go figure!

Hi there! And welcome!
A "vanity" is a thread where you talk about personal stuff... ( questions, birth of a kid, an unsolicited opinion, a prayer request, a marriage announcement)
Sometimes vanities can be quite good.
They tend to crop up more on Friday and Saturday night as people reax and enjoy thier "adult beverages"!
Nice to meet you!
