The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Re: your other post: What mysteries do you binge on? Well...a lot, really! I tend to read one or two "hard" books and then read a bunch of easier ones. I like Rex Stout, as I think I've mentioned...also Agatha Christie (of course), Dorothy Sayers, Mary Roberts Rinehart various other mystery writers from the 40s and 50s, some Ellis Peters and some spy / suspense authors, like Alistair MacLean.

Thanks for the welcome; and nice to meet you! Yes, I am starting with a compound, but I'd like to try longbow later. I'm also interested in making my own archery gear, so I'm pleased to hear you do that. That gathering sounds like a wonderful event, though I'm afraid I'm a bit far from MO (Wisconsin) and won't be able to make this July, at least. Where I am we have a Northern White Cedar forest in the backyard; I've been wondering if that's good wood to make a bow from. What is your opinion on that; and is there a good book on bowmaking you'd recommend for a beginner?

I find myself slipping slowly into insanity without you all in my life. And THIS group is helping you keep your sanity?
Hm...it boggles the mind!

Things aren't straightened out... but that little fire has been subdued for the moment.
The other fires won't really catch 'till next week. Then all hell breaks loose.

I like Stout and Christie. Haven't read the others, though I'd probably be inclined towards the 40s-50s stuff, as I like Dashiell Hammett and film noir of the 1940s. In the spy/suspense genre I like Sax Rohmer, Ian Fleming, Frederick Forsythe, Thomas Harris, and Robert Ludlum, of what I've read so far. I like your method of reading one or two hard books and then some easy ones--sounds like a good idea, I will try that :)

Heh...I was gonna mention Dashiell Hammett, but I couldn't remember how to spell his name and I was too lazy to look it up.
I'm still exploring the suspense genre...never used to read those. And I always get to the bookstore or library and don't know which names to trust. I've been collecting author names from Hobbit Holers, though!

Several good websites are stickbow, tradgang and primitivearcher. two good periodicals are traditional bowhunter and primitive archer. good books are "the bent stick" paul comstock; Native American bows, arrows, quivers" by Jim Hamm; Hunting the osage bow by dean torges and secrets of the omaha bow by Vonderhey. on stickbow use the search: type in board bows and there are several tutorials that take you step by step. Enjoy, it is a pleasant pastime or cheerful addiction, depending on who is describing it. :-)

Fedora - these cyber meals are all I can provide. Entmoot was far more satisfying and I didn't even cook! LOL!
WN - You will please note that the tea is extra sweetened. ;-)

Heh...I was gonna mention Dashiell Hammett, but I couldn't remember how to spell his name and I was too lazy to look it up.ROFL! I confess I had to look, too--my original had his first name spelled wrong, but fortunately I have a copy of Maltese Falcon on a bookshelf about two feet away from my computer so I just turned around and checked :)
I'm still exploring the suspense genre...never used to read those. And I always get to the bookstore or library and don't know which names to trust. I've been collecting author names from Hobbit Holers, though!
Me, too!--my reading list has grown by about 20 authors since I came here :)

We had GOOOOD food and plenty of it at Entmoot! There are some wonderful cooks around here!
