The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

G'd evening, all!

I got my new computer. It's very sleek, but WinXP is a little patronizing. Still, I'm happy.

Getting ready for my lovely business trip to Detroit...

Looks more like it's floundering.

Sounds fishy to me.

I'M supposed to kill threads, it's in the rules somewhere..
"Leave thread killing to the professional thread killers."
Floundering a thread isn't covered though, I think.

Congrats on the new computer! What features does it have?

Have fun in Detroit--hope you're going to a relatively safe part of town!

Actually we're going to the suburbs. Nice and safe, my boss assures me.

My computer has a nice fast processor (2.8 ghz), 30gig hard drive, and 312 meg of ram. Also it plays dvds and has a 15 inch screen. I'm in geek paradise...

Sounds like a nice system! I hope you plan to watch LotR on that 15-inch screen! :) I actually watch it on my computer more often than on TV :)

Heh, oh, I'm sure I will.

I'm making plans to visit the one graduate school that has, so far, accepted me. Hey, they're willing to pay... and it's in Colorado... and I'm seriously considering accepting their offer. So I'm going to go out, in a month, and see the school and talk to the professors, and we'll see what happens!

Hmm... having a little trouble getting used to this keyboard, but I think I'll get up to speed eventually.

Evening All:

JenB; think of it as adventure, and a couple more states visited. Since I didn't understand any of your computer stuff, if you like it, it must be a good one.

Hair; great picture of the ent; glad your trees are staying put and not wandering about.

Ramius; cool wheel barrow but I wouldn't care to push it too far if'n it was loaded with rocks.

OT; those sausage balls were a hit when I took 'em in to our Section's Friday breakfast/staff meeting.

g'nad; socialistic studies, probably never been taught quite the way you teach it either.

I actually may enjoy some of this trip. It's just wrong that I should have to spend spring break somewhere cold. Though, I've never gone anywhere for spring break before, so...

Hope your grad school selection process goes well. One of my best friends attends U-Colorado at Boulder. It seems to have a good science program (he's in biology) and be a pretty nice place for outdoors activity, though of course like most college towns the academic atmosphere is pretty liberal--of course in computer science that doesn't enter into the curriculm too much, fortunately.

What's different about your new keyboard? Is it one of those new circular types? I've been tempted to try one of those.

Hey Osage... and all!!

Actually, wheelbarrow-wise... that's the great thing about hauling rock at my place with the brake-enabled barrow: The *whole* place is downhill from the driveway. With my old barrow it was a *lot* of work just trying to control the thing and keep it from running away downhill. The brake changes everything.

As you can tell, I'm really jazzed about my new wheelbarrow. :-)

It's just slightly smaller than my old one, and I keep hitting the up arrow instead of the shift key. The alpha keys are the same, of course, and my typing speed is much better because it's down far enough.

Hi there! Just got home from work. Early tonight. :-)

I also got a nice little email from Jill telling about their new house and Abby's school. That was a nice thing to come home to! :-)

Software. Gotcha! LOL

Turned out not to be a software problem though. Graphics card. Yuck! You shoulda seen it though. I was demoing some solid models on-screen in my classroom and everything just started dancin' around! Everytime I moved my mouse things went wild! LOL!! It was hilarious!!! After I got over it! :-)

I had one old fuddy-duddy student in there that didn't find it funny at all. The rest of 'em were crackin' up with me.
