The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

> Oh dear, not another South Park person!

I watched the first few years pretty avidly. I'm kind of behind on the last few seasons 'cause my cable channel kept changing the schedule on me.

> I never responded to your last post because I haven't been online... let's see. The fiction writing class I'm in is just a general fiction-writing class. Fortunately he's letting us write genre if we want to. I dislike writing plain-fiction. Give me SF, or fantasy.

I prefer genre fiction, too--sf and fantasy, and also horror and mystery/espionage/thriller. It's cool your teacher is letting you write genre if you want to. What genre/s are you writing in for your class?--is the magic spaceship idea you mention below for your class or is that just something you're doing outside class?

> I work all my plots out in my head, too, so writing them down is... boring, I guess. But I've got one now that I like. Sort of playing off the inverse of Clarke's Third Law - I've got magic spaceships. It's just for fun right now. I don't think I'll be published for some time yet....

I've got a few minor things published in minor places, but still working on getting something major published--got a few projects I'm workning on at the moment. I'd be interested to hear more about what plots you're working on.

Gotta run to supper here--back later!

What I'm writing for class, at least the first one, is just straight SF.

It's cool that you're published! Wow. I used to do some fanfic, but otherwise I haven't even done web publishing. I have several dozen started stories. Always seem to flame out either at 7000 words or at 43,000.

OK, I worked out. I THINK it might have been easier than Monday, but not by much.

Having a glass of water and some yogurt quickly before headin' to church...then I gotta come home and make real dinner with leftovers for lunch tomorrow.

I'll be back in time for tea with 2J...and to bug Jen about her workout. ;-)

That's a big fish! BTW that reminds me, today someone was telling me about a 6+ foot sturgeon that weighed 180 pounds someone around here caught.

Cool. Sounds like that'll be a fun class! If you feel like showing your story to anyone when it's done, feel free to pass it on. I used to be part of a writing club where we'd critique each others' SF work, found it was pretty helpful.

> It's cool that you're published! Wow.

Thanks; but I hope I didn't make it sound misleading, LOL! Like I said, so far it's minor stuff--I won an annual essay contest at my school's history department which they published, got a few poems published in a school magazine, wrote the narration for a documentary my friend filmed for a local cable station, and most recently I've done some ad-writing for my friend's company. I have several articles and a couple nonfiction manuscripts that are close to being publishable, but I've procrastinated from finishing and submitting them, partly because of the perfectionist thing I mention, and partly because I get anxious over the marketing phase of the process, which I find somewhat intimidating. The novel I'm working on now is the first full-length fiction I've attempted. I think it's a good story, but right now it's too short--gotta figure out how to add 150 pages, ugh.

> I used to do some fanfic,

That's actually how I got started on the novel I'm working on. What kind of fanfic did you write?

> but otherwise I haven't even done web publishing. I have several dozen started stories. Always seem to flame out either at 7000 words or at 43,000.

Any idea why it flames out at that point?

I have been a beta-reader before myself. If you need one, I volunteer... um... as long as you're not writing a porno, of course.

The story I'm writing for class is really just a very cut-down and devoid of anything interesting version of what I'm writing for fun. Only told as straight SF. If I get finished with the real story I'd be happy to have someone else read it.

Re my last post: I didn't notice what page I was on and I was replying to an old post of yours where you were talking about a head injury. Whoops!--LOL! But I guess a little extra prayer never hurt anybody, so no loss, other than embarrassing myself. Please ignore me :)

The church part was hilarious :) I also liked the car chases a lot.

I love the movie, too. Marl's cousin ran the auto repair operations, working all night to get cars smashed during the day ready for the next day's shooting.

I still think "Blues Brothers" holds the record for car wrecks. It's just so heart-warming.

Heh, no, nobody ever died from too much prayer!

Um, maybe you answered all this up thread, but since you have no about page - who are you? :-) Other than a literary kinda person, anyway.

No porno! I'm not writing a novel about Democrats, LOL! Thanks for the beta-reader offer--I may take you up on that after I get a bit closer to done.

I'm a bur--a hobbit! :) Well, I think I mentioned up the thread that 2jedismom invited me 'cause I noticed her quoting "Silmarillion" on another thread and I had to chime in :) But more generally speaking: First of all, I'm obviously a Tolkien fan--have been since about 1977 when I first caught the cartoon adaptation of "The Hobbit" while flipping through channels on TV. Apart from that: I'm Christian and have one of my degrees in theology; my other degree is in history, so combining those I have a great interest in the historical aspects of theology (which is what brought me to the thread I met 2jedismom on--I was reading one of blam's threads on ancient history); and I also minored in philosophy so that's another thing I'm interested in. I've been studying martial arts for 20 years and have taught that off and on. I currently work for one of my Kung Fu teachers who sells Chinese herbal remedies online, and I've written some stuff in that area. Prior to that I worked in word processing and technical writing. That's some basic stuff about me, I guess. How about you?

Me? I'm an Elf, or maybe an Eowyn. I'm a computer programmer. I hope to go to grad school next year. Right now I'm living at home, with my six younger sibs, who I grumble about for hours at a time. I used to be homeschooled, until I started college. I read probably more than is good for me, and I'm overly fond of dragons. Oh, and I have delusions of author-dom, if you hadn't noticed.

Have been a Tolkien fan since I was eight and we read "The Hobbit". Dad didn't let me read LotR until I was eleven, though. I think Silmarillion is better than LotR, which is saying something, and I'm keeping an eye out for my own personal Faramir.

How's that?
