The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

See ya Sam... good luck in your travels.

I was fortunate to meet General Powell some years ago. It was in about 1991 if I recall, just after the gulf war and just about when the election cycle was heating up. It was in Seattle on a speaking engagement that Hair and I were priviledged to have special reception tickets. We got to meet up with him after his talk.

He is one of those rare people that really light up a room when they enter. He has an energy about him that is hard to describe.

Oh yeah, knife...I won't forget that, though, it lives in my pocket. I've got one of those folding tool things too, in my shaving kit, since there is usually a need to fix things when one travels.

Yes, can't wait to see precious. Cool that we have the "same daughter."

Just make sure it is in your checked baggage, not your pocket. :-)

So Powell is charismatic?

I envy you guys having met him. He seems a thoroughly decent man. I'm having trouble thinking of any democrat politicians I could say that about, but there must be some.

So Powell is charismatic?

Absolutely. In person he is a very powerful presence.

You're also right that he is a thoroughly decent man. He has an effusive trustworthiness that is all too rare among officeholders of recent memory.

I know what you mean about that Sam. Back home there are local guys who are RATS that I kinda like. We don't have many republicans running in local races at all down there so it's kind of a default one-party area. Whoever wins a RAT primary will be the only one on the ballot.

But, then I think of 'em runnin' on that ticket with the other people who are on that ticket. And I get disgusted. Personally, I wouldn't want to share the same ticket with the likes of state and national candidate so it makes me wonder why those guys do it. Lessens my regard for them quite a bit. I've told some of 'em so too.

Roger that. Some years ago I also got a chance to meet Jennifer Dunn, who just announced that she is retiring from public life and won't be running for the house again this time.

Very sad for us local republicans, but nobody can blame her. She's one of the good ones, and one of the few that seemed to never get really badly affected by her position. I had hoped that she would run for the senate and unseat Patty Murray. I think she could have easily done so. But it was not to be.

Word has it that our former Sheriff, Riechert (the one that finally caught the green river killer) is going to step in and run for her seat. He will likely win.

See you guys later.
I'll likely be up a little while, buttoning things up before leaving.

I was forgetting that I read Powell's autobiography, I came away from that quite impressed with the guy.

My wife's cousin, who is very liberal, also read it and said the same thing.

I would recommend "Bush At War" by Bob Woodward, and have, to my liberal friends. Bob Woodward (of Watergate fame) is not exactly a conservative writer.

It is mainly about the days after 9/11 and the prosecution of the war in Afghanistan. It is clear, however, that Woodward begins with a general disrepect for G.W.Bush that morphs during the prosecution of the war against Al Queda into a profound respect of W as a wartime President.

Good night, you guys.
Talk to you in a few days.

My sister in law has that book, perhaps I'll see if she'll let me borrow it.

Since the chemo has made him lose all his hair, but especially he lost it (apparently) in an area that might not be polite to discuss on a family forum.

You wanna whisper it to the dwarves and let us tell it?

Mornin' Sam. Great story.

I had radiation treatments and not chemo, but I do understand the associated indignities. You get to the point that you just have to laugh about it.
