The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

There is no way to describe either of these things but completely worth sitting and watching and waiting for them to happen. Nothing compares.

This is a good thing about living far from any big cities! I know what you mean about things changing before a storm...and different shades depending on the strength. Before a really big wind and rain storm, things get almost yellowish...and still. It's really neat to try and predict what will happen next!

I imagine anywhere flat you can see much more...but I'm still not willing to give up my hills!

Yeah, I'll have to do that again. I was makin' the bacon and went to get an egg or two out of the fridge...and spotted the mushrooms. Started thinkin' how good those would be cooked in the bacon grease and decided I had to try it.

Thanks for the recommendation... I can't say I've ever heard of Ms. Henderson, though the same was true of the great Connie Willis until my father found 'Doomsday Book'... I tend to read more older science fiction. I guess I'm a little wary about trying a female author. I don't know why.

Well, maybe because I trend toward hard or military SF and there aren't many women writing that.

So far, for Flinx/Pip, I have "The Tar-Ayim Krang", "Mid-Flinx", and "Reunion". I seem to be missing a whole lot in the middle. Hopefully the used bookstore will help me there.

From listening to what Sam and Ramius have to say about being on the sea I am thinking that watching the weather from there would be a whole new and different experience. Something really wonderful. I would like a little bit of chance to just see it!

You are right about the flat areas. Oddly though, the old place was not in a flat area. It was very hilly, but my house was on a ridge line between 2 streams. So, I was high enough to see all the area north for miles. Couldn't see as far in any other direction but far enough to be good anyway.

Here, I am in the flatest of flat country. But, being in the midst of a city of 100K people, there isn't an opportunity to *see* the weather like in the country. I miss that terribly. And the wind! Oh, how I miss the wind! I love lying in bed at night and hearing the wind blow! -- and having NO light at all shining in my windows at night. having it *really* be dark!

i'm rambling. sorry.

Well, the breakfast sounded so wonderful that you made me hungry at a time of day when I *never* want to eat! LOL I went and heated up a tortilla to eat with butter and honey.... not nearly the same.... but you made me hungry! :-)

Just a little. Walked a bit and sped it up to a jog just to see how it felt. But right now it's in an odd position since I don't have the extension cord...need to get that tonight so I can put it where it should be!

But it feels good and solid, and wide enough that I don't feel off balance. Mom once had a manual one that a) was really hard to actually get going, and you couldn't walk naturally, and b) was too narrow, so you had to concentrate hard while walking. No way you could run on that thing...

I'm really psyched about all this! I just hope I can keep it up long enough to get in shape...but having you to bug me should be a big help ;-)

Gotta get ready and take off for work. Our IT guy is coming over for the day today. We're putting a server in my classroom for the sole purpose of student's being able to keep their projects there. Gotta make his pot of coffee. Server won't take long.... and then we'll spend the day blabbing. He got new weaponry for Christmas and he's bringing it to show me. And we're having lunch with his wife (my friend). Said all that to say, I prolly won't be around much today - though I'll be right there in the classroom logged on.

i'm rambling. sorry.

Don't be! I know what you mean!

I live in town right now...not a huge town, but it does mean I can't see the stars like I can out at Dad's. There you can see the Milky Way...like see beyond the closest stars and see the misty light of the stars behind them...and behind those...really puts you in awe of the size of the universe

Sigh...can't wait for my homestead!

And you have to keep me on track too! I'm looking forward to the end of it, when I'm able to run for miles!

I've always wanted to learn Scottish dancing, or fencing, and I've always promised myself that if I ever got into shape, and built up my endurance, I'd look into learning one or the other. Now that I've lost some weight, it's time to get really fit...

So...by the time Ruthy wins the lottery and buys the Castle, we should be in good shape for running on the beach?

*cue "Chariots of Fire" theme*

Elf-boy is good to go for school: no fever. I already gave him some claratin and singulair (with two chewable motrin tabs for good measure) for his cough and congestion/sneezing. On the way back from the school run, am getting some orange sherbet and cough drops for PE.

I am making an appointment for PE today as soon as the doc's office opens, and am driving him to the doc. He won't go unless I make him go. Men.

I will be fine as long as no one shakes me up like a soda.

By the way, I finished the first few chapters of Princess Bride. The characters are a lot different from the movie...I suppose partly because they have more depth, but...

Humperdinck is the MOST different so far, I would say. And of course there are plenty of minor characters that were cut for the movie...Buttercup's parents and the Countess and such.

Good morning! I can't wait for my bit of land either!

The Blue and Gold banquet went great...they didn't fiddle-fart around doing stupid stuff, they got right to the point of everything. The pennant I made looked great, imo! The lady (that I clash with...she was the supervisor of the banquet) used them for the picture area...where all the scouts got their "professional" pictures made. Here's one that I took...Matthew is front and center, with is cap on. The paper mache (sp?) basketballs have their beeds and patches inside them!

Best of all, Matthew achieved his Bear Rank! I guess that means he can progress on to Webelos, and that everything from now on is just fluff (Arrows of Light, Symbols of Faith badge, ect.)

All in all, it was a good time. Sat with a good friend of mine (her son was the only one that showed up to work on the decorations the other day)...the den leader (that I clash with) forgot to mention my name when she thanked the individual "banquet committee" people, for which she later apologized profusely and my response was "That's ok...I was just helpin' out, didn't even realize I was on the committee!" I just made the pennants and did a bunch of errand-running for people.

I get my hair cut and my manicure today! 10:30am Central.

Hey, I could get into that Chariots of Fire thing!

Yeah, PB is very different from the movie. I mean, the author makes comments just all the time, which took some getting used to...

The characters get built up quite a bit more, too. And just wait for the Zoo of Death!

Good morning! Glad to hear the banquet went well! How did folks like the wings?

I need a haircut, too...

And just wait for the Zoo of Death!

That should be interesting, for sure...so far it's only been mentioned. That's not even mentioned in the movie...seems to have been changed into the Pit of Despair, which isn't at all the same.

How did folks like the wings?

Apparently they liked them A LOT! There was none left!

It went well with the sports theme...

The Dad and Lad cake-bake this year sound like fun...the theme is WEAPONS!

No, the Pit of Despair is in the book. The Zoo of Death was just completely removed.
