The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

"...never became hull down..." That passage is from one of Tolkien's letters, describing the ships leaving the Havens, I don't believe that description appears in LOTR, though maybe it is in the Silmarillion.
I've seen the green flash 3 or 4 times in FL, it happens here in winter, normally. I never particularly believed it until I saw it.

The 'green flash' is a phenomenon of sunset at sea in particular atmospheric conditions. Under some set of conditions (mainly really, really clear air, I think...) then just as the very last little bit of the sun disappears over the horizon at sunset there is sometimes a very bright and very brilliant bright emerald green flash of light.
It only lasts for a few seconds. But it often takes years at sea to finally see it. But it is there.

That sounds very cool. Guess since I'm not in the position to spend lots of time at sea this is something outside my realm... but, VEY cool to hear about. :-)

Yeah, if you are watching the sun go down, just before it actually goes below the horizon, the sun itself actually turns bright green, it's vey cool.
On clear days, yes, and when the sky is turning pink instead of orange.

Which Flinx/Pip books have you read/bought so far?
And are you ready for another author? I think you'd like Zenna Henderson, one of the great unacknowledged sf authors of our time. Strongly spiritual throughout, and The People, her best-known folk, are very religious. And she writes a lot about teachers, and kids. She's one of the first female science fiction writers who wrote in the modern era, and she never hid behind a man's pseudonym or a man's writing style. She writes like a woman, and by that I don't mean girly, or frilly --- some of her characters are as tough as nails. Some are scary crazy, and some, like Serena, are very brave.
"Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there?"
Her stories --- especially that one --- move me.

Hah! Right now they are doing a story on the "berserkers"... those nutty scandinavians that seemed to so regularly scare the crap out out of the Romans 'cuz they charged into battle naked and crazy.
Now they're sayin' that the Berserkers "may have been influenced by alcoholic beverages" before they went charging into war.
Nooo... ya think??? Yeesh.

Nite nite anyways...

... geeks, freaks, and security leaks ... Borrow away, Master Sea-man!
If you could see some of the people there ... the tattoos! The piercings! The electric-blue hair!
And that's just one guy! ...
