The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Thanks, Penny! 2Jedismom and Wneighbor are in a higher-risk area than me--hope they're hangin' in there!
To: JenB
Now, how did I know you would have the answer... ;)
So what about the translation of the word...does it mean "hope?"

Scary business! I'm glad you are in a slightly safer area at least!

Yes, estel is hope. The key root is "el" which is in a lot of Elvish words, means 'star' and is always a good thing. "Gil-Estel", one name for Earendil, means "Star of High Hope".

I'm trying to picture French marines taking a beach :) In most other places I think it would be called "swimming". It's like charging up the beach, only in reverse.

Yes, Estel was one of Aragorn's other names, and it means "hope". The name and its meaning are mentioned in RotK Appendix A Part I Section v, starting on page 420.

has to be an undefended beach... Even so... some beaches can be kinda' steep ya know. Also might have sharp little coral bits. They might just give up anyway.
To: Fedora
Ah-hah! Not only the answers but references too!
Now I understand Arwen's repeated statements about hope, especially in Two Towers (in the movie, I mean). Nice double-meaning there...
Well, I'm off to rehearsals and stuff, catch ya'll later. Hopefully after the storm!

Howdy Rutheee!!!!
Hi all!!! Another day has slipped sludgingly into the septic tank of history.

Tonight they're predicting a "squall" here, but hopefully that will stop short of a tornado. Winds in my area tend to get worse a little later in the year--had some big ones last year.
To: Ramius
Well put, Ramius.

[sigh] Seattle... sure, we got rain, but no tornadoes, no hurricanes, or nasti biting leg-bugs. OK... the occasional earthquake, but only little ones (lately).
Tornadoes are kinda cool, but only when they are in the distance.

Woohoo! I think the 2J shimmy is in order.

It can't be June yet. I have too much to do before June.
To: Ramius
What on earth do you have to do before June? Besides buy a shotgun, I mean. ;-)
