The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Does your church do "mercy meals"? I can say from our family's experiences, when someone's sick, having dinner brought to the house for a couple days/weeks is one of the best things friends can do.

If you do, you could volunteer to provide one and let Matthew help...

I'll second what Jen said. That's a big help. And knowing people cared and were praying for us when Mom was sick was a big comfort...even though most people didn't know what to say. Maybe the boys could make cards?

Yes, our church has a committee that coordinates that...apparently the parent's Sunday school class has that covered for the time being. There are five children in the family. I imagine I'll be helping get them to church and such.

Maybe offer to take the other kids when there are doctors' appointments, and such?

Right...that'll come in the future. Right now the little boy is deathly ill. Took a couple of really bad turns in the night. They were able to get his white count down, and things are looking better apparently, but he is very very sick.

They don't think he'll be coming home from the hospital at all for a month at least.

Can you imagine? My heart is just breaking for that family.

Oh, wow, I thought you meant he'd just been diagnosed. Wow. Well, I'm sure there's even more help they'll need now... someone to go over and run the vacuum at their house now and then... someone to take the other kids to the park or something... and of course just knowing someone cares about your family is a big deal.

Yeah, he was really really sick...just terribly sick with what they thought was the flu. Admitted him into the hospital and found out at 3am Wed. morning that he had Leukemia.

There is a friend of theirs that is coordinating any needs...I gave her my cell phone and plan to keep up with her.

So we're dealing with that and trying to figure out what we can do to practically help.

Speaking from recent experience...

Brown bag lunches: sandwiches, fruit, chips, cookie, bottled water...etc.

Hospitals have different rules about food and such, but if that family is forced to eat out of the cafeteria for long it'll get expensive quickly and they certainly won't have time or desire to plan and prepare a meal. You can also do breakfasts and dinners in gladware- things that only need to be microwaved. We so much appreciated the single-serving edibles (no preparation, minimal refrigeration) that family and friends sent with us.

Ok. Thanks Lil...

I hoping to get to the hospital this afternoon with a basket of something...granola bars, trail mix, bottled water sounds good...

We practically moved into the hospital with Mother and brought all kinds of food. They had a lounge on the floor with microwaves.
