The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

That was weird... I did a refresh, and your message showed up, but the body of the message was blank.
How odd.

Are you posting leaky packets?
To: Ramius
Hmm... do you think it's an FR thing, or an Internet thing? 'net getting hit hard by worms?

Don't think so, but it could be lots of things. Corrupted and incomplete return of the page, I suppose, just not incomplete enough to throw an error. Server error.
A pothole in the infobahn.

It's rough osage... Bet it is kinda quiet there.... No pesky dog to trip over when you get up.
I bet you find somethin' to trip over before too long, eh?

Packet Pocket Socket
With apologies to Dr Seuss
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.
If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash,
and the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash,
and your data is corrupted 'cause the index doesn't hash,
then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash!
If the label on the cable on the table at your house,
says the network is connected to the button on your mouse,
but your packets want to tunnel on another protocol,
that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall,
and your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse,
then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang,
'cause as sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang!
When the copy of your floppy's getting sloppy on the disk,
and the microcode instructions cause unnecessary risk,
then you have to flash your memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM. Quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your mom.

Holy cow... Rose and I are watching a show featuring old Superbowl commercials (on CBS). They just showed a commercial for a new TRS-80 computer, "prices starting at $2999!"
How far we've come...

They talk about the big MacIntosh launch too? Dad had a Mac SE30 That was the cutest computer ever.
How far indeed.
My favorite is the Budweiser commercial with the Clydesdales that take a bow after 9-11. That one brought me to tears when I saw it on a similar show yesterday.

Yah... no kidding. Our fixed assets database still shows some of the first computers the company bought. One was an IBM 8088. 64K ram, a floppy, no hard drive. $6,000.
In fact I've still got one of the old Compaq luggables in my office. Pretty cool. I'm still trying to figure out how to bodge a network connection for it and use it for something.

They showed the Mac "1984" commercial... the one where the woman comes running in and throws a hammer through the "big brother" television screen.
That one always makes me shake my head.
