Word For The Day, Friday, December 19, 2003
The Verbivores | 12/19/03 | Teacher

Posted on 12/19/2003 5:28:31 AM PST by RikaStrom

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. Practice makes perfect.....post on....

amatory \ah*meh*tow*ree\, adjective:
amatorious; adjective
amatoriously; adverb
amatoriousness; noun

1. Pertaining to, producing, or expressing, sexual love; as, amatory potions. [Obs.]
2. Expressive of or exciting sexual love or romance

The Autumnal Recrudescence of the Amatory Urge

When the birds are cacaphonic in the trees and on the verge
Of the fields in mid-October when the cold is like a scourge.
It is not delight in winter that makes feathered voices surge,
But autumnal recrudescence of the amatory urge.

When the frost is on the punkin' and when leaf and branch diverge,
Birds with hormones reawakened sing a paean, not a dirge.
What's the reason for their warbling? Why on earth this late-year splurge?
The autumnal recrudescence of the amatory urge.

--Susan Stiles, copyright December 1973

Etymology [Latin am t rius, from am tor, lover. See amateur.]

i also go off on the Halliburton issue. xsbro worked for them for 20 yrs, up until a year or so ago. The people that go off on H'burton and the Cheney connection, #1, never heard of the company before it was linked with Cheney and #2, have no earthly notion what the company DOES, its preeminent standing in that particular field. They strictly swallow the Leftist BS that the company is getting rich off of the Cheney connection. ILLINFORMED and STUPID.

Exactly! They act as if Halliburton barely existed pre-2000, and ignore the fact that it's been an industry-leading company for many, many years -- and is damn good at what it does!

It all boils down to the fact that leftists don't understand the most basic thing about business, the real world, economics, etc.: That companies exist to make money and with some *very* rare exceptions, those that fail to make money aren't long for this world. I think it comes as a big shock to them that big corporations exist for reasons other than keeping wealthy, white, Christian, conservative men employed.

Believe me - I believed the same thing when I went into journalism, and did my darnedest to follow it. What a rude awakening I received.

Ha! At the Gannett chain where I worked, they did little to even try to hide the bias!

For one thing, I was denied approval to volunteer on some NYC political campaigns in 1998 because -- get this -- one of them would involve the Governor's race and since Pataki had lived within our coverage area and his kids had gone to schools that we cover (even though they hadn't lived there in nearly FOUR YEARS), it might be perceived as biased coverage of high school sports. *BUT* this one rodent-like twit (both in her appearance and personality) was able to wear her CLINTON-GORE t-shirts, both in the newsroom and out to cover her dopey soccer games, without anyone saying a word to her!

Around September 1998 or so, I was out in the newsroom, watching on TV as Clinton and Nelson Mandela were gladhanding and bullclintoning each other. I kind of mumbled something about how demeaning this had to be for Mandela, wasting his credibility on such a reprehensible turd. You would not *believe* the overtly nasty glares and sneers I got from the other reporters (news, not sports)!

I've been off the moderately amusing Bill O for a while now.

Any one who's mantra is "the federal government must do this (insert problem of the day here) is NOT a conservative in any way shape or form.

I agree, he is not a conservative, he isn't a real Catholic either. Quit watching him some time ago as well.

Ack - that's really bad.

I at least had the backing of the management of the radio stations I worked at when it came to "unbiased" work. I handled all of the government/political news and never had a complaint about 'bias" in any of my coverage of issues until a controversial piece of legislation about fishing. the most vocal critic was the sports director of the radio station. He actually went on the air encouraging his listeners to call the station and demand I be pulled off the story because of my bias in my news coverage.

My crime of 'bias" amounted to the fact that I aired the opposing view to the sports director's friends in a story I did about both sides of the issue. The sports director never spoke to me again after he was forced by the general manager to make an on air public apology to me for questioning my integrity.

I've never considered O'Reilly to be a conservative and I used to find him amusing. Now I find the 11pm rerun of the program a great sleep inducer.

Your friend has the same opinion of Chrissy that Chrissy has of himself, as a moderate to slightly conservative kind of guy.

I agree with your opinion of Olsen. She was brilliant and fast on her feet without a hint of venom. Coulter plays the game the same way the liberals do with the quick jabs.

How many people have you heard call Haliburton an oil company? That's how ignorant they are - they don't even know what they do. And what are the odds that the mainstream will point out it was the Kuwaitis who overcharged and not Haliburton? About as good as Tampa Bay making the playoffs this year...

O'Reilly gets very intimidated about people smarter than him. He lost me for good when he didn't keep after the Red Cross.

No need to confuse the leftists with facts! I mean, over on Usenet, I *still* do battle with those who *insist* that Clintigula was impeached for (non-)sex, that Bush "stole" the election, that our government "created" and trained bin laden, and so on.

You don't even want to know what happens when we've tried to explain to them that Nazis are National Socialists...

It's the same old underhanded technique of repeating lies over and over until people start to believe them. I did not get any feedback on my letter and article about kwanzaa after submitting them to the schoolteacher. I plan to give copies to the librarian who posted k is for kwanzaa in there and the principal(a good friend and genuine nice guy).

I know that feeling! It's like a year or 2 or so ago, some twit on Usenet made some blanket statement about conservatives or the GOP, which happened to be dead wrong. (It was so long ago that I don't remember what it was about!) So I challenged her for proof, and instead of providing any, she challenged me for proof that she was wrong, which I supplied in abundance. Then, I kept on her ass and hammered her for days all over the newsgroup, wanting to know when she was going to post proof or admit that she was wrong.

I wasn't surprised that she dodged and hid from me, but what was most disheartening was that another (nominally) conservative woman told me that I should just "let it go." I told her that I would most definitely NOT do that, as it would be allowing that old lie go unchallenged. I told her that just because something is repeated often enough, that doesn't make it true. And especially since it was slanderous about us, there was no way I was going to let it go -- and at the very least, I was going to make the liar look like the total idiot clymer that she is.

OK, I'm doing a stream of consciousness thing here, and I just remembered what the vicious lie was all about: the bitch claimed that the GOP is inherently racist, while I proved that the 'rats are far worse and far more systemic in their bigotry.

No way in HELL was I letting that canard go unchallenged! Especially since it came from a total idiot who really doesn't believe that NYC and Washington are more likely to be terrorist targets than the malls of suburban central Florida. She was a *hugh* support of John Edwards and I also kicked her stupid, lazy ass re: medical malpractice and the plague of lawyers.
