Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

I've been there too and my only surprise is that he isn't complaing about the food - yet. Well, hopefully he'll be getting some of our goodies soon so won't have to complain quite so much about the food!
Still, if we could work out the logistics, I'd be happy to move over there and do homecookin' for all those guys for the duration! I come from a HUGH family. I understand cooking on a grand scale! :-)

Impractical? Prolly not. RAH was vey good at research. He wanted to make certain his work had a sound scientific grounding.
To: Professional Engineer
Impractical in the sense that "I wanna go to the Moon"/start a revolution/become a starship captain is impractical. Impractical only if you don't try it.
I appreciated RAH's researching his books. You could tell he wasn't just making stuff up. It made me feel grown up, reading his stories and trying to follow the ideas. There's a passage in Starship Troopers explaining how the suits worked... I read that and I feel like I know enough to operate one. He really was the Grandmaster.

THAT must be awesome!!! :-)It hasn't happened yet, because I haven't finished all the "final touches" on the knives.
I'm actually a bit worried. It's one thing to receive one of our knives in the mail, and wonder what kind of kook would send something like that to a complete stranger. It's another thing when you work with the person, and one day just hand him the box. Maybe he'll think I've gone elfy on him.
One thing that's always hard to portray, even to the folks here, is the sheer joy that comes from doing this kind of good works. Even standing in a hugh line at the post office, if not enjoyable, is tolerated because it's a worthy cause.

Hey WN...I have a care package question for you...
I have all these paperback books that I don't want anymore and I wondered if maybe, instead of taking them to a used bookstore, I could ship them off to some of our groups of soldiers? Would they like that?
If so, can you let me know the details, like where to send them and how much postage would be? When you have time?

She's standing funny, but isn't she cute? You two look very happy together. Although I had to look closely to figure out exactly how she had her hind legs planted. Is she a contortionist?

I just sent this off to our local "news" paper.
Unlike the mistake I made when he trashed "The Two Towers," I did not read the Grima Wormtongue (a.k.a. Daniel Neman) review of "The Return of the King." It would have been a waste of time. From his rating of one and a half stars, it was obvious he didn't see this movie either. Someone needs to let him know that the movie isn't over when the popcorn stops singing. Isn't there someone there at the RTD with the sense to know this man has no business writing film reviews? He's not fooling anyone except the person signing his paycheck.
I'll let you know if it prints. I may still be in my "blackout" period. They'll only print a letter once every 60 days.
To: JenB
Yes ma'am!!! Some of the soldiers would love that. I can freepmail you information - tomorrow prolly. Got some catching up to do from a little outing I went on yesterday!

I have found someone else to whom I would like to send a knife if possible. Don't have all the details yet though.
I have been challenged to keep boxes available to mail these packages in. You know, you always need the right size for what you've got. I bug the other instructors here for used boxes.
The electronics instructor met a neighbor lady of his who sells Avon and was giving away boxes. He went over to get some for me and told the lady about our project. Turns out that lady has a son fighting in Iraq now too. Seems that she's kinda out of touch with our kind of politics and is very unhappy that she thinks the people in the country aren't supporting the guys over there. So, my fellow instructor got me the guys mailing information so I could send him a care package. Also, got me the mom's information so I could call her up and stand with her over her kid! So, if ya don't mind, when I get this guy's address I'll send it on to you so he can get a knife too.

My letters are usually posted. The one I sent two weeks ago (about the Bush trip to Iraq) was probably too soon. Plus there were several others on the same subject. I made this one short and sweet. Like I said tho' they'll only print one every 60 days.
BUT, I was on the local drive time talk show today. Michael Graham who does our 3-7 talk radio show (good conservative southern boy) HATES this movie reviewer. He was making all kinds of fun. So he asked for folks to call in that had seen the movie.
I was able to tell him I saw the trilogy. So he asked how that was, how many breaks we got etc. And he asked if I liked it. I said "well written, faithful to the book, a perfect ending to the three." Then he said "so you sat on your duff all day and you STILL liked it..." After that he had to cut away for the news.

Yeah, he'd be as big as Hagrid. Heh...a couple of years ago in our church Christmas production I had a really quick costume change and did not have time to change my make-up to add a "beard." (or basically a 5 o'clock shadow). So they gave me a fake beard.
So, here I am in long flowing Biblical robes and my not really too dwarflike size with this big black furry beard.
I went through one rehearsal with the kids calling me Hagrid. Then I said "nevermind."

I have a new school troll report.
The guy who has lost his temper in class 2 times this quarter escalated himself another couple of levels this week. He cornered one student in the hallway Monday and ranted about what a sorry teacher I am. Interesting that the student he cornered thinks I ought to be in line for teacher of the year.
So, the student who was confronted was very mad and stayed to talk to me about it after class on Monday.
Today, a different student was accosted in the parking lot here by the irrational guy. The crazy guy actually scared the normal guy cause he had him cornered in the car. But, subject matter was the same. Crazy guy hates me and wants to report me and get me fired. Again, the guy he cornered is just one of those students who loves my class and thinks I'm okay. He came to me very concerned and upset about what crazy guy would do.
So, had to call my boss up here. I've got body guards again and a meeting tomorrow to tell all of what's gone on to the dean.
Ya know, I'm kinda tired of this crap. I just wanna come up here and teach school. Not worry about freaks!

Actually, she was on the bit and bent to the right when the photographer walked up. I swung her head around towards the camera, but her body is still bent right - she simply stepped out with her left foreleg to balance, leaving all the rest of her legs still on a circle to the right. All my (saddle) weight is still on my right hip bone (that's why my foot is on its outside edge). If she had continued to move sideways she would have crossed her right foreleg over her left . . . and that would have REALLY looked funny! (kinda like Lee Marvin's horse in
Cat Ballou)
Just got back from the barn a few minutes ago (after giving her a late night snack with her chondroitin and tucking her into her blankie).
