The Hobbit Hole V - Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...
ecurbh

Posted on 12/11/2003 2:07:57 PM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

I saw a show recently where some rich dude had built a replica of a Model B flyer, including the ONLY running wright Bros engine in the world. He was doing some taxi tests, inadvertantly got airborne, then crashed it.

That was the first time I had seen the TTT EE, and I think it made the movie better.

It did make the film better. PJ has done that two time now, the second better than the first. I can only imagine how much better RoTK will be when it gets extended.

Red Bull? My brother used to live on the stuff before he got onto his atkins kick. Literally, he bought it by the case.

Wonder if the re-creation will fly.

Actually, there are at least a half-dozen different recreations out there, some more faithful to the original than others. Some have already flown, some have fizzled, and at least one has flown brilliantly. Some of the projects try to be as faithful the the mysterious original as possible, while one used modern materials in a how-would-the-Wright-brothers-do-it-today approach.

I have to admit, I was impressed with the "modern" Wright flyer, which was built by the aviation department of Utah State University. Carbon fiber structural elements, and heat-shrink fabric over foam plastic stringers. It has an off-the-bike Harley engine, and has eight times the horsepower with half the weight of the original. They put wheels on it, and it took off from a runway and whizzed around like the Wright Model B, which was built in 1909 after six years of experience with the first one, which was constantly modified after constantly crashing.

Even the Model B needed a catapult launch. In fact, the first flight, 100 years ago today, was into a 26mph headwind. Reenactors have flown their planes into a minimal 12mph headwind, and that gives them enough lift to barely get above the tops of the grass, although one group got a first flight of 136 feet. I think the original flyer never got out of ground effect.

Still, it's fascinating watching these groups track down information on the original flyer, since the Wrights were notoriously paranoid, and destroyed much of their working papers.

Jr. did great. I think we were both wishing for better food options tho. There was an Arby's right outside, but they wouldn't let you bring it in.

I was wondering about the one they're supposed to fly at Kitty Hawk today. I heard that the Wright Bros. didn't want to fly it too high that day because of the winds.

What can I say about RoTK? It met all my expectations. I won't spoil anything for those who still have to see it, but PJ did himself proud with this film. It is the perfect capstone for what has been a wonderful retelling of Tolkien's masterpiece. I laughed, I cheered, I was frightened, and I cried. I cried from sadness and I cried from joy. Our little fellowship that we have been following for the past three years finally accomplished what they set out to do.

Outstanding! Thanks for the ping, Kevin. I have tix for 6:00 tonight.

Kinda illustrates one of the reasons I sometimes think about moving a few more miles to the east...

Any idea when this might be released? The theatrical release of TT was great, but the extended version was head and shoulders above it. After seeing it, I just wish I could see the full version of RoTK tonight, instead of the theatrical cut.

Wagner vs. Tolkien, here we go again, but I must admit I'll only be able to read it later.

Is there not a dedicated thread for folks who've seen it?

I'd echo virtually everything you said... except my butt DID notice it! But even that was better than I feared. In fact, logistically, EVERYTHING was better than I feared. And our theater also handled it superbly.

As to the movie, I'll say more when there's a thread, but for now I will say this: I literally had to keep reminding myself to close my mouth. (And I ONLY use the word "literally" literally.)

I didn't click the link...hope that's right!

Not too long 'til I see it...if I can make it! They just closed the college where I work due to freezing rain accumulation. But I'd practically crawl there for this! Luckily the theater is close to where I live.

I'd say that, like FOTR, it's one of those movies you can go to with unfairly high expectations — and have them surpassed, again and again.

EXCEPT if your expectation is by-the-book literality. I hasten to say that I myself am one who would prefer staying as close to the book as possible; but I also can live with diversions. (For instance, the Faramir bit in TTT went 'way too far, as it changed something fundamental; the Aragorn-over-the-cliff part didn't, because it didn't.) And I'll be discussing ROTK's diversions in spoiler-friendly threads. But, if you need me to say this, just do expect some diversions. But also you will see a lot of verbatim lines straight from the book.
